Would you have 2 children with the same initial?

My fave boys name has the same initial as DS's name and I just think it will be too confusing in years to come with post etc - or is that a really trivial reason not to use the name I want to?

i would, they won't live in the same house forever

avenanap · 27/03/2008 16:55

It would save on the iron on labels.

belgo · 27/03/2008 16:56

The boy's name we have chosen has the same initial as one of my dd's names. But apart from that it fits all the criteria and we love it.

hecate · 27/03/2008 16:57

I wouldn't. But that could be because I know a couple called Darren and Debbie, and their kids Daryl and Dean. And it's so daft, imo, that it put me right off!

wheresthehamster · 27/03/2008 16:58

I have, no problem.

Scotia · 27/03/2008 16:59

My two eldest (25 & 22) have the same initials for first and middle names - wasn't intentional. It never really caused too many problems with post etc.

belgo · 27/03/2008 17:00

yes hecate, that is daft!

Tigerschick · 27/03/2008 17:00

IMHO it would depend on how much you like the name.
I know people who went out of their way to give their DC the same initials as themselves and I know people who did the exact opposite. Both of them, I feel, were too driven by their criteria and may have (in one case did) missed a name that they liked better.
Really, if you have a name that you love then go for it - you can always give them a middle name with a different initial.

ceebee74 · 27/03/2008 17:00

Scotia - that is good to know.

Of course that by the time they are old enough to receive their own post, letters will no doubt be obsolete and this will be irrelevant

They are both biblical names and therefore go well together and I can't think of another boys name I like as much

Personally no, ds1's name starts with J and there were loads of other J names that I liked, but wouldn't consider beacuse it was the same initial.
But on the otehr hand I just don't get chosing names that go together.
Wierd.

Tippytoes · 27/03/2008 17:02

Both my children have the same initials for first and second names. I did wonder whether it would be a problem when they got older with post etc. but liked the names, so just went for it and both middle names were after family connections anyway so was always going to be the same initial, albeit different names - one is a ds and one a dd.

ceebee74 · 27/03/2008 17:02

Chasingsquirrels - how weird - as these are both J names aswell

I have a J and a T - tbh ds1 chose T's name, dh wasn't interested and I could only think of my girl name () which wasn't to be.
I don't LOVE T's name, but that is who he is.
But then when pg with J the baby was always going to be that (full) name (if a boy) and within a week it had been shortened, and we never use the full version.

AbbeyA · 27/03/2008 17:14

I wouldn't do it- purely for the difficulty with post later on.

perpetualworrier · 27/03/2008 17:16

My sister and I have the same initial and it still causes occasional probs now, even though we're both married so have different surnames. Post addressed to our old names turns up at Mum's and she doesn't know who to send it on to.

It was horrible at times when we were young, especially on Valentines day

Agree with squirrels. It never occurred to me to check if my 2 DS's names went together. Do most people do that?

iwouldgoouttonight · 27/03/2008 17:17

Me and my sister have the same initial and its never been a problem (never really occurred to me to be honest!). My mum used to occasionally forward her bank statements to me when I was at uni but I definitely wouldn't let mixed up post put me off a name (but I am biased!)

pedilia · 27/03/2008 17:41

DS2 and DD3 have the same initials not a problem as far as I can see

Graciefer · 27/03/2008 17:45

My two boys are JRJ & JWJ.

We are used to the confusion though as we live in DH's parents house and I have the same intials as MIL, she still gets the occassion post here, so it can get a bit confusing

ChocolateRockingHorse · 27/03/2008 17:56

Two of my children have exactly the same three initials. Was deliberate but was a silly thing to do and had caused complications, eg on the online banking where the kids accounts are in my name but their initials are attached.. I couldn't see which was which! Had to get them to put an actual name on one of them..

My third child has "his own" initials!

tortoiseSHELL · 27/03/2008 18:06

Dd and ds2 have the same initial, which we didn't think about at the time, but it doesn't really matter, even with post, as she is Miss and he is Mr. And as ds1 is eldest and has a totally different initial, we don't get accused of having no ideas!

dozymare · 27/03/2008 18:11

My DC both have the same initials....MWM and MBM and hubby is MRM!!! I am odd one out!!! However, PG with 3rd and my dilemma is should i go for another M! THat however, is a thread for another day!!

Go for it, as someone has said, you are not always going to live together!!!

BCLass · 27/03/2008 18:17

On the positive side if they are the same sex and look similar it can be an advantage.....

Younger one has plausable id for going to pubs/clubs etc Elder one has plausable id for cheaper rates on buses/football matches etc.

Or was this just me and my sister?

My older brother and I have the same first two intials (actually also my DH). In the distant past before electronic banking etc it meant that someone paid all his birthday money into my account for several years and they were in the "same" name and consecutive numbers. Parenst made me give it back when they realised....Other than that, has never been any probs at all.

My husband and I both have J names, we named our DS1 a name that began with J without thinking about it. DD came along and DH wanted to call her a name that could begin with a G or a J so we used the J because we all had J names and we thought everyone would assume we would use the J version. DS2 came along, no J name for him so we are J, J, J, J and L. Our names don't go together, they are just the names we liked
