Would you have 2 children with the same initial?

My fave boys name has the same initial as DS's name and I just think it will be too confusing in years to come with post etc - or is that a really trivial reason not to use the name I want to?

I knew a family that called their children Kirsty,Kelly,Kerry,Kimberley,Katherine.Imagine the post in their house.

shelleylou · 06/04/2008 19:47

I have the same first intial as my two of my brothers its never caused any problems as we all have different middle intials. It does get confusing with my dad and db2's post as they have 2 of the same names but in reverse order and dad often uses his middle name rather than his first name IYKWIM.

Lomond · 06/04/2008 19:51

I have two girls with the same initial, tbh I hadn't even thought about the post issue! I just liked the names Now I'm wondering if it will be a problem!

RustyBear · 06/04/2008 20:09

MIL gave both DH & SIL names with the initials DM and actually said it was to save on name tapes SIL was always known by her second name though.

It was only a problem once, afaik, when they were both learning to drive at the same time & sent off test application forms - the DVLC cashed both cheques but only issued one test appointment.

What is potentially more annoying though is that MIL and I are both Mrs J Surname, which last time she was staying with us she used as an excuse to open one of my letters...

evenhope · 06/04/2008 20:19

We gave DS3 a name that started with D, completely overlooking the fact that DH's first name is D. They have different middle initials but it has started to cause problems now DS is starting to get his own post.

Also DS1(20) is MD. Thought that was OK, but every time he gets a letter from his bank or student loans people (in fact anyone who uses the full initials) DH opens it. Every time he says "but it says Mr D.."

DH wanted to give DD2 his initials "for a laugh" Needless to say her name is completely different and she doesn't even share 1 initial with anyone else.

JackJacksmummy · 25/04/2008 23:20

just had to add i know of a couple - justine and justin!!! WTF - do you think they got together just because they share pretty much the same name???

Also my DP and youngest son both share the same initials - J.M.P

martini82 · 26/04/2008 10:24

my mum and dad had exactly the same initals (including middle name) then proceeded to have 5 children all with the same initial (we didn't have middle names tho) teh post issue wasn't too bad cos re bank acc asked them to use our full names! i don't think there is anything wrong with it.

Nbg · 26/04/2008 10:26

My ds's have the same initial.

Not a problem. I just call them the wrong names sometimes

cazboldy · 26/04/2008 10:29

I have a Caitlin and a Charlie but I think that being a girl and a boy it shouldn't cause many probs.

Dh and I were talking about the wider family the other day though, and my dd2 is Molly, and she has cousins called Maisie, Millie and Miriam, and an Uncle Michael, so lots of M's in the family.....

FAQ · 26/04/2008 10:29

I have 3 DS's

initials are

TYM
TSM
TMM

so yes I'd do it

suedonim · 26/04/2008 11:42

My dd's have the same first initial. It was completely unintentional, I hadn't even considered that aspect of names. It is occasionally a pest if official letters come through with just the one initial and at Christmas when cards are addressed to 'Miss X Donim'. There is a 9yr age gap between the dd's as well so there's no confusion with schools or anything so it doesn't rule our lives.

johnso · 26/04/2008 11:49

No, I wouldn't. I t doesn't sit well with me

pinkyminky · 26/04/2008 20:02

You would have to be vigilant in making sure they added their middle initial for correspondence. My parents have the same initial, and my bil and mil have too, the middle names are essential, I think. My bil had two dd with the same initial, but I'd try to avoid it, I think.

B1977 · 26/04/2008 20:03

My DH, MIL and SIL all have the same 1st initial, their post was always getting mixed up. Otherwise, not a problem, if you like the names go for it.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 26/04/2008 20:04

No, instead I have 3

No planning, just the names we liked

Two even have matching middle initials too

Ah well, worse things happen at sea and all

B1977 · 26/04/2008 20:05

lol JJMummy I met a Henry and Henrietta but she always called herself Hetty so it wasn't so obvious!

redwino · 26/04/2008 20:05

My brother has the same initial as me and my 2 sisters have the same as each other. DH has the same as his sister which once resulted in her student grant being paid into his bamk account!

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 26/04/2008 20:05

Oh and it doesnt save on iron labels here becuase mine all just say 'The Peachy family'- far easier (but no good if youre called Smith I guess)

Wezzle · 26/04/2008 20:15

My 2 DDs have the same initial - not intentional though.

While I was pg with DS I got it into my head that I wanted his name to begin with the same initial (I blame the hormones)

Anyhoo, there wasn't one that I liked so it wasn't to be

Psychomum5 · 26/04/2008 20:17

we do.....we have M.A.F for DD1 and then M.A.J.F for DS1.

the other are...

H.N.F
N.A.F
J.J.F

me and DH are

S.J.F
A.D.F

I never thought it would be a problem until recently when we had solicitor letters regarding the accident we were all in last year, and they sent appointments at the same time for DD1 and DS1, and then again for DD2 and DD3...we were confused about DD2 and DD3 being mixed up, but it turned out that the H.N and N.A were similar enough too to confuse the computor (well....the solicitor blamed the computor at least....as they do!!!)

oooh....one thing I do tho.....when we get post addressed to Mr S F...., I often open it thinking it addressed to to MRS F.....!

lizziemun · 26/04/2008 20:33

I would say no, Me and my dad had the same intial and we were always opening each others post.

But although dd's names don't start with the same letter. We don't call them by that but by pet names which do start with the same letter.

lucykate · 26/04/2008 20:35

we all have similar initials and have never found it to be a problem,

me, aja
dh, aca
dd, lka
ds, lca

i wouldn't, cos my sister would have been a complete cow if i'd ever opened her post by mistake when she was in her stroppy teens. And if she'd opened mine, she would have gloated about it. (i like her now, though!)

helenelisabeth · 26/04/2008 20:42

My ex-neighbours' called their 8 (yes 8) children names all beginning with R. All after the father who's initial was R as well.
