Juliette or Esme?

Anametolove · 17/03/2024 13:11

Baby girl due in June and we were set on the longest time on Esme, a long time favourite.

But this weekend someone from my family mentioned Juliette and I love the name!

It helps I am French, so a nod to my heritage (although Esme is as well).

DH loves Juliette and really likes Esme.

Which one is your favourite and why?

DD1 is Lucy

thanks!

Love Juliet / Juliette !

edit: not exactly sure why it’s my favourite over Esme but I just think it’s such a classic and goes well with Lucy

Hermittrismegistus · 17/03/2024 13:19

I'd go for Juliette. It's a beautiful name.

heldinadream · 17/03/2024 13:19

Both lovely names.
How about - Esme Juliette Surname?

Beachs · 17/03/2024 13:23

There is lots of esme’s so Juliette is lovely. Bonus is the n Jules is cute

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 17/03/2024 13:24

LOVE Juliette

Moreteaandchocolate · 17/03/2024 13:40

I love Esme best! I love that it’s short, simple, pretty for all ages and doesn’t get shortened much. Juliette is pretty but may well become Jules (which I do like but not as much as Esme).

Anametolove · 17/03/2024 13:42

@Moreteaandchocolate that's a very good point - what stops me with Juliette is the what seems to be very common shortening Jules. I don't like it just personal preference.

I prefer Esme but both are lovely names.

PostalPanic · 17/03/2024 13:47

I know it's hard to influence a shortening, but how about Etta for Juliette? If you
like it and try it from babyhood, it might stick?

Anametolove · 17/03/2024 13:49

@PostalPanic i much prefer it to Jules but is it possible to not shorten it, ever? :D As a French person shortenings don't come naturally to me and I much prefer the full name, everytime!
Will a Juliette end up a Jules most of the time?

Juliette is gorgeous, Esme feels more like a random sound than a name to me

I think you can keep it as Juliette for the primary school years, but in my experience that often changes in secondary school when kids often make their own choices.

DuchessOfSausage · 17/03/2024 14:05

Juliette gets said as Julie Ette, prefer Juliet, will be shortened to Jules.
Esme gets said as Ezmi and Ezmae.

If you want the French spelling of Juliette, why not use Esmée?

I know a Juliette and she gets called Julie a lot.

OverTheCountryClub · 17/03/2024 14:06

Juliette. If it helps, I have a 4 syllable, shortenable name and it's rarely shortened. I introduce myself as my full name and people generally stick with it. Sometimes people shorten it but it doesn't seem to stick!

Anametolove · 17/03/2024 14:15

@DuchessOfSausage for practical reasons; we live in the UK and since you don't use accents, I son't wamt her to be saddled with a name with an accent, for administrative forms, passport etc. Hence Esme (would pronounce Es-meh).

Thanks @OverTheCountryClub , would you tell me your name? Been scratching my head trying to find longer names that are not automatically shortened :D

Esme is so popular I prefer Juliette. It’s more unusual. The Juliette I know isn’t a Jules.

Teach2Teach · 17/03/2024 14:39

Esme is a personal favourite of mine. I have boys but this is definitely a name I would have considered if I had girls.

Henrietta (Etta) might be worth a thought. Similar to Juliette but the nn Etta is similar to Esme.

lavagal · 17/03/2024 14:43

Much prefer Juliette and it goes better with Lucy

Baconking · 17/03/2024 15:14

Esme has become very popular in recent years and some people say Es-me, others Es-May, so that could be annoying. Could also be shortened to Es as an adult.

I prefer Juliette and would just reiterate the full name any time someone tries to shorten it.

Redcar78 · 17/03/2024 15:15

Esme every day of the week, I'd have LOVED a girl called Esme but I have all boys!

Honeybeebuzz · 17/03/2024 15:43

Juliette but both are lovely, i have heard Esme a lot recently and people pronounce it differently es-me or es-meh which i feel would bother me

theduchessofspork · 17/03/2024 20:04

Juliette

Far too many Esmes and the two pronunciations will be annoying

trippingthelightfantastic1 · 17/03/2024 20:16

I love Esme, and it is far less likely to get shortened. Juliette is okay but Jules not so much! Plus, Jules is also used for Julie, so if it ends up being shortened people won't be clear what her actual full name is.

Ellmau · 17/03/2024 20:19

Juliette is lovely.

Jules might be less likely if you keep the French pronunciation of the J?
