Juliette or Esme?

Baby girl due in June and we were set on the longest time on Esme, a long time favourite.

But this weekend someone from my family mentioned Juliette and I love the name!

It helps I am French, so a nod to my heritage (although Esme is as well).

DH loves Juliette and really likes Esme.

Which one is your favourite and why?

DD1 is Lucy

thanks!

@Lalupalina , they are, as many have posted. Many can't make the distiction though and as much as I like Juliet I'd not choose it because I don't like it when it's said as Julie ETTE. (as opposed to JOOL-i-et)
I know a really nice Juliette but she gets Julie a lot, possibly because the -ette bit seems almost separate.

I wonder if the -iana names like Eliana and Liliana get the -ana dropped off too.

I have an DD Esme, she is 22 now and I still love it. It is annoying though when people call her Esmay! Hmm

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/03/2024 17:22

Juliette, there are Esmes everywhere.

anothernamechan · 18/03/2024 19:49

I'm a Juliette, be aware you'd be setting her up for a lifetime of having to spell it as it's not the usual English spelling. Also I got fed up of the 'where's Romeo' jokes that persisted throughout high school fairly quickly.

Anametolove · 18/03/2024 20:15

@anothernamechan thanks for the feedback - do you like your name though?

The Juliette I know is known as Lettie.

Why?

Why not just call the poor kid by her actual name?

The ‘poor kid’ is an adult women who likes being called Lettie. it’s because Juliette is quite a long name and Lettie/Let/Lets is what yer friends call her so it’s a sign of love and closeness.
I also go by various short forms of my long French name with friends and family. Different people call me different things and it’s nice.
why would it make a person a ‘poor kid’ for having a shortened form of their name??

DuchessOfSausage · 18/03/2024 21:39

Lettie and Lets make me think of toilet.

Nicebloomers · 19/03/2024 08:04

Juliette is lovely. Esme is too, but quite popular. The brevity of Esme does pair well with Lucy though. Juliette nn Ettie is adorable.

WaltzingWaters · 19/03/2024 08:06

Juliet (although I prefer this spelling of it).

bohemianmullet · 19/03/2024 10:23

"Lettie and Lets make me think of toilet."

For goodness sake. Lettie is a perfectly nice and familiar name/shortening, usually of Letitia. The above comment is just childish.

DuchessOfSausage · 19/03/2024 10:36

If it is, then chances are children might think it too, @bohemianmullet .

Anametolove · 19/03/2024 10:51

Well at least it would go with Lucy 'loo-seat' :D

Agreed. For what it’s worth, I asked her and my friend Lettie has never had a single person make that connection. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Marcipex · 20/03/2024 22:53

Juliette
or Juliet, lovely name.

There are loads of Esmes, with both pronunciations.

Marcipex · 20/03/2024 22:55

Lettie is a pretty name and has never made me think of toilet.

RuthW · 21/03/2024 15:59

Juliette.

Hate it when Esme is said Ezmay instead of esmee.

You hate it when a name is pronounced correctly?

LBOCS2 · 21/03/2024 16:05

We have a Juliet and she's never had her name shortened by anyone.

We call her J, Jaygle, Jaygel-bagel, julietty-spaghetti, etc etc but only at home as affectionate nicknames :)

SushiSushi · 21/03/2024 16:24

Juliette

Esme has two distinct pronunciations in the UK - Ez-mee and Ez-may. Whichever one you choose, there will be people who use the other.

So I would go for Juliette, which is lovely.

Esme is a French name, therefore the UK pronunciation of ‘esmee’ is incorrect

I have an Esme a few years older and I feel the same. My Esme used to feel so sad when she was little because absolutely no tat trinkets had her name on them
. so different now.

rainingsnoring · 21/03/2024 16:42

Juliette is a beautiful name. I prefer the Juliet spelling but Juliette makes sense for you as you are French. I also love Julia.

SushiSushi · 21/03/2024 17:23

@MaloneMeadow And neither of the UK pronunciations match the way it is said in France. 😃

Lalupalina · 21/03/2024 17:35

Esme has two distinct pronunciations in the UK - Ez-mee and Ez-may.

As a previous poster said, neither of these are the correct pronunciation of Esmé.

Cotswoldmama · 21/03/2024 18:14

Juilette is way nicer. It could be shortened to Etti, if it gets shortened
