Which of these do you prefer for a baby girl?

Other options are Wendy or Amanda.

Deborah is a beautiful name, so elegant.

MirandaBlu · 10/03/2024 11:53

I like Deborah pronounced with the stress on the second syllable - deh-BOR-ah - like in Heavenly Creatures. Depending on where you live that might be considered affected, though. I don't really find Debs or Debbie attractive, but if you need/want a shortened form Debo (as in the Duchess of Devonshire) and Deb are not that bad.

I raised an eyebrow at first but actually, thinking about it, why not? Deborah especially sounds classy and cool to me, and Debbie would be cute on a little girl. It feels like most under-10 girls here are called Isla, Ada, Eva and Ivy. Your list sounds fresh by comparison. With the possible exception of Wendy, which I don't really like.

Thank you yes this is what I am thinking. Those names sound so tedious now! I'm coming round to Michelle and Laura. Pretty, simple. I knew a girl called Wendy when I was little and always thought it was a sweet name.

They're all awful, sorry.

Apart from Laura.

RosesAndHellebores · 10/03/2024 11:57

Michelle reminds me of East Enders.

Amanda - admittedly a small sample but I have never met one who hasn't been and utter cow. Apologies to any nice Amandas.

Deborah is biblical and easily a classic.

Kimberley - just no.

Wendy - someone else has made the Karen connection. Also I have a relative who is rather nasty despite being 87! I think it's a made up name or a diminutive of Gwendoline which is much better.

giraffesaregreat · 10/03/2024 12:00

All awful!

Phillippeflop · 10/03/2024 12:01

Im not a fan of any of them to be honest. Laura is probably your best bet

could also consider
Lauren, Jenna, Rebecca, Natasha, Sarah, Sally, Amy, Alison, Rachel, Joanna, Claire

They are all awful, apart from Laura, which is a great name.

Zwicky · 10/03/2024 13:05

Have you considered Sharon. I know “Sharon and Tracy” turned it into a joke name in the ‘80s but the joke is over. It’s got the same 60s yet biblical classic vibe that Deborah has.

Uricon2 · 10/03/2024 13:23

A lot of these (not all) are pretty much exclusively the names of people around 60, who will be approaching/over 80 when your little girl is grown up. It would be like calling a little girl "Clara" or "Ada" or a boy "Alfie" in the 1960s, just didn't happen. I think the 100 year rotation before things come back in to favour is a thing.

volie · 10/03/2024 13:27

Noo, they're all bad. But hey, it's your child.

I'm sure lots of people will hate this but I'd call mine something like:
John
Jane
Ruth
Mary

I like their simplicity and minimalism. They're not fussy, like all the 'ie' and 'ia' names.

user1478639495 · 10/03/2024 13:28

Kimberly but never Kim, I have a Theodore and no one calls him Theo if they do they get corrected and it's fine it as we call him by his full name lol just follow our lead so it's rare.

user1478639495 · 10/03/2024 13:29

Oh and firm favorite of Laura such a beautiful name

Cakencookieobsessed · 10/03/2024 13:31

Michelle, it was the name of a lovely school friend who died. Wendy is a frumpy name.

THEMOSTREAL · 10/03/2024 13:36

Deborah makes me think of the Pulp song Disco 2000

DontGiveADuck · 10/03/2024 14:39

There was a Michelle, Deborah and Kimberley in my year at school and I’m an 80s child.

Yes my name is on this thread. 😂

hollyandivyknickers · 10/03/2024 11:33

Deborah is hideous and basically child abuse.

she would always be called Debbie. Urghhhhhh

Child abuse??? How fucking offensive to survivors of actual child abuse!

My name is Deborah and I get Debbie, Deb and Debs. No one has ever said my name is hideous. I was named after Debbie Harry by my dad who died when I was 4.

What's your name so I can insult it? Angry

Lifeinlists · 10/03/2024 15:58

@RosesAndHellebores

Wendy was made up by JM Barrie. He knew a little girl who used to call him "my Fwendy-Wendy" and so he called his heroine in Peter Pan, Wendy. It wasn't a name before 1904!

When I hear Kimberley I think of the way Victoria Wood used to say it in her sketch.

Kimberleh! 'av you seen 'er?
I miss VW.

I actually agree with you. Sharon is a strong name (Tracey less so).

I also like Joanna. A lot of these names are really growing on me. I think they're a bit more accessible than Ruth or Mary but I do know a little Mary.

Fascinating! Didn't know this.

Also I love Victoria Wood but I don't think kids nowadays will relate Kimberley to her sketches.

@hollyandivyknickers What a ridiculous comment. Deborah is just a regular, if not currently unpopular, name. I wouldn't choose it myself but there's nothing actually wrong with it.

Why not just not comment on the thread if you have nothing constructive to add?

ChanelNo19EDT · 10/03/2024 16:34

I like Kim.

The others are all so terrible. Whyyyyyyy
