Is this name too old fashioned?

Opal - for a girl. Cute or too old fashioned?

For a boy we like Grayson, Henry, Frederick and Jasper.

For girls we also like Ruby, Ellie, Chloe, Evie, Liv, Phoebe, Persephone, Ottilia.

Don't think I've ever met an Opal, not sure it's old fashioned, just unusual! I think it's pretty

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/02/2024 14:57

I think its a lovely name but I consider Opals unlucky so that would put me off.

Grayson is the only one of your names I don't like.

theduchessofspork · 25/02/2024 14:57

I like it, definitely due a revival

Jasper is a nice pairing because that’s a kind of quartz

I like it the best of your choices.. a lot of your other girls’ names are pretty but overdone

Onelife2024 · 25/02/2024 15:01

I’m not too keen on Opal (I’m of the generation who thinks of opal fruits 😂). But Pearl is coming back in fashion, so maybe you’ve hit on a new trend?

I love Ruby and Chloe - gorgeous names! Evie is lovely too, if you don’t mind its popularity. Ellie and Phoebe are also nice. I personally find Persephone and Ottilia a bit frilly for my taste, but I prefer them to Opal as they can be shortened to Sephy / Tilly etc if your daughter prefers.

I like all your boys choices, particularly Henry and Frederick.

DontGiveADuck · 25/02/2024 15:15

I really like it. I like Pearl too.

Evie and Ellie are soooo overused. Always paired with Rose/May/Grace. Every other girl is an Evie.

I like Grayson and Jasper.

TeaAndCake456 · 25/02/2024 15:31

I love Opal ❤️
I would have used it this time if I'd been having a girl, it's lovely.
FWIW i don't automatically think of Opal Fruits! Or the Opel car

MissyB1 · 25/02/2024 15:34

Im another who would say Opal fruits! And the first car I ever drove was an Opal Kadet.

Prefer Pearl.

muggart · 25/02/2024 15:34

I really like it OP.

Amazinggrace89 · 25/02/2024 15:39

Opal is cute

SirChenjins · 25/02/2024 15:43

I’m not keen on precious stones names - they’re a bit cloying and twee. I like all your other names though (apart from Grayson).

DoYouWantToStartACultWithMe · 25/02/2024 15:47

I don't think it's that nice a sound when you say it out loud - oh-pul.

Pearl much nicer but sort of depends where you live - in Scotland it would have two syllables, so depends if the pronunciation bothers you.

Liv - the main character in every crappy chick lit book from the 2010s.

BoleynMemories13 · 25/02/2024 16:56

I wouldn't worry about it being old-fashioned, as old-fashioned is so in vogue right now! However, personally I'm not keen. I just don't like the sound.

I like Ruby and Phoebe best on your girls list. Henry from your boys.

SiobhanSharpe · 25/02/2024 17:00

Grayson reminds me of Grayson Perry. Your other boys' names are all good.
I also like the connection pointed out upthread between Opal and Jasper.

SparklyOwls · 25/02/2024 17:01

Makes me think of the sweets Opal Fruits.

NewName24 · 25/02/2024 17:02

Another who doesn't think it is old fashioned - I don't think it has ever been common / popular.

My mind also goes to opal fruits

Geebray · 25/02/2024 17:03

For girls we also like Ruby, Ellie, Chloe, Evie, Liv, Phoebe, Persephone, Ottilia

They're all massively popular atm. Except Persephone, although that is becoming more popular. And shouldn't Ottilia be Ottilie? Also gaining in popularity.

Soowoo · 25/02/2024 17:03

I don’t like Grayson or Persephone. Opal is lovely.

Geebray · 25/02/2024 17:03

Forgot to say, I really like Opal!

SparklyOwls · 25/02/2024 17:03

Jasper gets pronounced different ways depending on accent, I'm from the deep south so I can Jarrrr-sper. Like Tanya .. I say Tarrrr-nia.

CuteCillian · 25/02/2024 17:04

I like Opal, great with a Jasper! I think Persephone is getting overdone now and not keen on Grayson.

BarelyLiterate · 25/02/2024 17:07

My first thought was Opal Fruits, too. Lime was always my favourite. 😋

I doubt she would be mocked at school for that connection, though. It’s ancient history.

Geebray · 25/02/2024 17:09

Yeah, it's not as if the OP is going to call her daughter Starburst 😆

Wizardo · 25/02/2024 17:10

I think Opal is the best name on the list. Very pretty

Comedycook · 25/02/2024 17:11

Opal is very sweet but I just can't imagine using it in day to day life. "Opal, your dinner's ready". Just doesn't work to me.

Comedycook · 25/02/2024 17:13

Ruby, Ellie, Chloe, Evie, Liv, Phoebe, Persephone, Ottilia

All nice except for Persephone and Ottilia which are a little pretentious. And a big NO to Evie....every other little girl is called Evie nowadays.
