Is this name too old fashioned?

Opal - for a girl. Cute or too old fashioned?

For a boy we like Grayson, Henry, Frederick and Jasper.

For girls we also like Ruby, Ellie, Chloe, Evie, Liv, Phoebe, Persephone, Ottilia.

Opals bring bad luck. I'd avoid that

yourlobster · 25/02/2024 17:14

I like Opal but do prefer Pearl also if that's an option.

No, they don't.

I like Opal.

I personally think ottila sounds like attila the hun

DontGiveADuck · 25/02/2024 18:55

Phoebe, Ruby and Chloe are also really popular. Ruby and Chloe more about ten years ago now though.

I met yet another tiny Evie today. It's like calling your daughter Isabella.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 25/02/2024 19:03

Isn’t Vauxhall called Opal in other countries? Something like that, it sounds automotive to me.

Persephone came to a very sticky end, have you read her story? Ottilia is truly awful, makes me think of Attila the Hun. Why not Ottilie?

Jasper is a Labrador name.

Honestly some of your names sound wannabe posh. Henry, Fred and the girls names apart from Persephone and Ottilia are ok.

Ametora · 25/02/2024 19:17

I don't think it is an old fashioned name as it hasn't ever really been a name.
More 1960s club hostess in Soho.

I know an Opal aged 10

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/02/2024 19:19

I like Opal, I knew a family of 3 sisters called Opal, Coral and Pearl 🙂

SabrinaThwaite · 25/02/2024 19:37

Opel is the car marque.

Opals are only considered unlucky because some varieties readily absorb water and can discolour and crack.

Jasper gets pronounced different ways depending on accent, I'm from the deep south so I can Jarrrr-sper. Like Tanya .. I say Tarrrr-nia.

So you add the letter 'r' where it doesn't exist? I doubt that, you'll have a non-rhotic accent where you are incapable of pronouncing the letter 'r' and get confused between father and farther. So don't add lots of 'r's to indicate an extended vowel sound. I read lots of 'r's as a rolled 'r' (as in 'there's been a murrr-durrrr').

My first thought was Opal Fruits too! But only because they were my favourite childhood sweets.

Out of your girls names my favourites are Ellie (Eleanor/Elinor?) and Chloe and Phoebe. Not a fan of Persephone. How about Libby/Lizzy (Elizabeth?), Lottie (Charlotte?), Grace or Abi (Abigail?).

Out of the boys names I like Henry (was on my list) and Jasper best. A friend has a little boy named Frederick and it seems quite a long name when she calls him at the park etc. Not sure about Grayson.

suzettenoisette · 25/02/2024 20:06

Thank you :)

Opals don't bring bad luck, that's a myth that has been created to sell more diamonds. Throughout history opals have been associated with good luck. So I'm not worried about that.

Persephone had darker sides to her story as well (as do all characters from mythology) but also created the seasons so I like that.

Opal is a lovely name.
I agree that Evie and Ellie are very popular, although that may not matter to you.
Jasper is nice.

peaceinourtime · 26/02/2024 14:34

Opal is nice. For.a boys name please don’t go with Grayson, my cousin named his son Grayson and it’s one of the most dreary names ever.

Jessieshome · 26/02/2024 14:54

Your girl names are very very popular right now. They're nice names though, but everyone thinks they are nice, that's why there are so many of them around! Even Persephone is become very popular. Not heard of any Ottilia's yet, sounds like a war lord to me though, sorry, am I thinking of Attila the Hun perhaps (sorry)?

Opal does seem a little old lady to me, but it's still quite nice and a bit unusual. I know a little girl with the middle name Pearl so named after the precious gem because she was considered a very precious gift to her parents.
