Danú as a girl's name?

Danú (or 'Danu' without the accent). What do you think of this as a girl's name? For an Irish girl - it's the name of the mother of all gods and goddesses in Irish mythology. Thanks

Beautiful

RedLem0nade · 19/02/2024 19:42

I love it. I also love the “Dana” variant though it’s still a bit too linked to the erstwhile politician/Eurovision winner!

Bythelake89 · 19/02/2024 19:43

From looking online it seems that very few people have been given this name. Myself and husband think it's lovely but feel unsure about the fact that no one else seems to choose it as a baby name! Are we missing something about it? 😅

How do you pronounce it? Dan-oo? Day-new? Danyou? X

Bythelake89 · 19/02/2024 19:46

"Dah-noo"

Sounds like European yogurt brand or a character from Moon and me

AnotherCountryMummy · 19/02/2024 19:48

Never come across it before, but really like it!

Bumblebee413 · 19/02/2024 19:50

Thank you. It’s a very unusual one- I’ve definitely not come across it before x

Once it becomes her name it’ll be fine when people get used to calling her it. Just writing it down to people who haven’t heard it before though, it doesn’t come across as very nice. My brain is trying to connect to with brand names, the toilet brand, ragu the pasta sauce and daihatsu the car

ALunchbox · 19/02/2024 19:54

I must admit I'd never heard the name before and didn't know if it was a boy's name or a girl's name. i also thought it was Turkish. If everyone's as ignorant as me, you'll get lots of questions.

SunnyFog · 19/02/2024 20:13

may be that it's not used because it's so obscure. Danú doesn't appear herself in any stories at all. The Tuatha de Danann have lots of stories, and it's not even clear if Danann is from a name Danú or Anú.
Dana is lovely.

Onelife2024 · 19/02/2024 20:57

I like it, as long as you don’t mind needing to explain pronunciation to people?

Agree with pp that Dana is also lovely and has fewer pronunciation issues if that matters to you?

"Dah-noo"

That’s how I would have said it.
I think it’s lovely. I agree with a PP who said it sounds like a European yoghurt brand, but that’s just because I haven’t heard it before. After 5 minutes I’d have forgotten. Beautiful name.

Allthingsdecember · 19/02/2024 21:00

I think it’s lovely!

HemlockSoup · 19/02/2024 21:06

I'd picture a Danú wearing a lot of tie dye and belonging to an alternative community in Connemara.

Bubblesdublin · 19/02/2024 21:15

Dont like it.

ladygindiva · 19/02/2024 21:18

A bit of this

It also reminds me of Danni / Danielle which is best left in the 80s

I’ve never heard of her - where is she referenced? Anyway, there are many many nicer Irish names around

I used to know a Danu, in England, no cultural connections as far as I'm aware. It really suited her and was completely accepted and in as much as I ever thought about it I just thought it was a lovely name, and I think everyone else thought the same. Very pretty and unusual but in a good way, certainly not 'out there'.

newlaptop12 · 20/02/2024 07:23

ooh, Danone......

(showing my age!)

CoffeeAddick · 20/02/2024 07:26

I would think Danone or a Lidl yogurt or the Arabic tease version of Dana or the Somali version of Dana.
I will get used to an unusual name quickly once I have met the person though but those are my initial thoughts if I head the name. When I saw the accent I thought it's a Romanian or Bulgarian boy name.

Great to hear from someone who knew a Danu, thank you for this 😊yeah I think it manages to be unusual without being too far out, as it's similar enough to very well known names like Dani etc.

I've met one, pronounced Dannoo. I like it.

Pikukat · 03/07/2024 17:45

I'd love to know if you went with that one. I know two boys with the name! I think it suits boys as well as it suits girls. A really beautiful name with Irish roots, but also Hindu and a number of other cultures! Often Danu is a water goddess!
