What names didn't you use?

And why?

The names I liked if either DS were to be a girl included;

Isis (obviously could not use, sadly)
Leveret which I maintain is a fabulous name but DH did not agree
Hebe
Hera

DH did not like either

Boys

Tobermory (love it still but it sounded wierd with our surname which rhymes!)
Agamemnon (we are not Greek and it was a bit of a pregnant hormone name)
Ezekiel (DH vetoed).

Both DCs have quite normal fairly old fashioned names of the David / Stephen variety which i love because it's unusual on 14 and 12 year olds now.

Phoebe - we decided on another name.

Frederick - she was a girl. This was 30 years ago so unheard of for babies then.

Soubriquet · 09/02/2024 12:21

Leveret is a baby hare….

We was gonna call ds Bobby but then changed it.

DD was originally a double barrel first name but then changed it.

SnowAndIceLobelia · 09/02/2024 12:22

I know @Soubriquet Smile

I still like it enormously for a girl. It was in a book I read as a name but can't recall which one.

Another one I liked briefly was Deliverance for a girl. That was a book too- Deliverance Dane.

Even I had to admit it would be a shocking thing to do to a child though.

I like Aurelia for a girl but went with more traditional names. Dd2 was called Amaryllis whilst I was pregnant but didn't really call her that!

MonsteraMama · 09/02/2024 12:35

Éowyn. My all time favourite girl's name. My Norwegian husband was very keen for her to have a Norwegian name so she had a connection to her heritage and I agreed, we picked one that we both loved and that suits her to the ground.

I do occasionally look at her with her long blonde hair, horse obsession, and no bullshit personality and think she's still an Éowyn on the inside 😂

spiderlight · 09/02/2024 12:40

Rowan - my absolute favourite name and I've regretted it ever since. Someone convinced me that it didn't go with our surname.

Other top contenders on my list were Toby, Isaac and Daniel, all vetoed by DH for spurious reasons. Apparenty Toby was 'too posh' and he had a blanket dislike of even remotely Biblical names.

aintnospringchicken · 09/02/2024 12:41

We had picked out a boys name and a girls name for DC1 as we didn't know if we were having a son or daughter.
We'd chosen Emma with Jane as middle name if we had a girl.
I bought a nursing maternity bra and the frickin' bra was called Emma Jane. That put us right off. Seriously, why do bras need a name🤔

Enko · 09/02/2024 12:46

Elizabeth for dd1 we liked the idea of her having British Queen for first name and Danish for second name (as it was then) she didn't look like an Elizabeth still got Margrethe as a middle name. (Maximillian for a boy)

Millicent for dd2 also didn't look like one (Benjamin for a boy)

Søren for ds (Ilona or Karenza for a girl)

Seraphina and Maeve for dd3
She would have been Søren or Bertram if she was a boy

Strokethefurrywall · 09/02/2024 12:48

Baby #1 - didn't use Brandon or Elliott for a boy.
Didn't use Harper, Leah, Alannah, Dylan or Piper for a girl

Baby #2 - didn't use Lachlan for a boy
Didn't use Valentina, Sloane or Lenore (my mums name)

Had 2 boys which were infinitely easier to name than my imaginary girls!

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 09/02/2024 12:49

Always loved the names Lolita and Delilah - Lolita I mentally vetoed due to the associations, and DP gave me awful side-eye with Delilah. Fortunately we had a boy 😅😅

NigelTheCrab · 09/02/2024 12:49

Ended up with boys, but our girl name was always Naomi. Close contenders were Nina, Helena and Sylvia. My favourite girl name is Violet, but DH didn't like it.

DS1 was going to be Zack, right up until the day before the 20 week scan. DH said he preferred the second boy name on our list, I liked them both equally, so we went for that. I'm so pleased we did - DS1 is absolutely not a Zack.
Weirdly, Zack wasn't even on the table for DS2. I liked Ewan and Owen - DH didn't like them.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 09/02/2024 12:51

We didn't know the gender

Rose - too popular
Evelyn - too popular
Andromeda - we both loved it but felt it was a bit much, same for Artemis
Georgina
Roberta - these I'm keeping in reserve!

Anakin - DH vetoed (meanie)
Rhys - too much like Reese's Pieces
Maximus - too gladiator!
Robin - my NCT mate nicked it first!
Rohan - too much like Rowan which is really popular
Marcus
Christopher - these I'm keeping in reserve!

GingerLiberalFeminist · 09/02/2024 12:52

Oh Eleanor and Matilda but too popular, and Oliver and Louis too popular too

Bettalife · 09/02/2024 12:56

Gilbert. I love the name but (now ex) DH said he refused to have a son named after a rugby ball 😭.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/02/2024 12:58

never used my boy names: Benjamin / Damian

the girl names I loved but DH couldn’t get onboard with: Daphne for DD1 and Melody for DD2- most gutted with Melody.

Wailywailywaily · 09/02/2024 13:00

I had boys but if I’d had girls i really wanted to call the Desdemona and Finavear.
probably just as well I had boys 😂
Boy names that got vetoed included Sebastian, Gideon, Manus, Gilbert. In the end they got fairly classic but unusual biblical names.

PuttingDownRoots · 09/02/2024 13:05

Isis as well actually! Discounted as similar to DD1s name... before the terrorist group was known. Even more ironic was he was in the Army actually in the Middle East when she was born!

Edelweiss... that was pregnancy hormones at work.
Boudicca... again hormones

Eleanor as I didn't want an Ellie.

We never could come up with boy names. In a way it was lucky we had girls!

Mayhemmumma · 09/02/2024 13:08

Mia - love but doesn't make sense in my husbands language

Evelyn - never had a third baby in the end but if id had another girl this would have been her name

River - too bold

Jack - too classic in comparison to rest of family so used as a middle name

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 09/02/2024 13:34

Thora - we weren't brave enough with DC1. We would have used it for DC2 but he was a boy!

Max - this was in our final two choices for DC2 and we stood over his incubator in SCBU trying to decide between them. In the end we decided Max was too popular and went for the more unusual choice. I am glad we did as I have since taught some very tricky Maxes.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/02/2024 14:13

We didn’t use Alec Joshua (as our baby was female)

We also didn’t use
Jennifer - DH wasn’t keen
Chloe - I wasn’t keen
Sarah - not sure why

(went with Imogen).

Nicebloomers · 09/02/2024 15:02

Rafferty nn Rafe- a bit too posh sounding
Arthur- has since become very popular
Ernest- was worried about the milkman song but in hindsight shouldn’t have cared.

Beatrix
Primrose- glad I didn’t as it would not have suited her
Inès- love it so much but literally no heritage/ links to Spain. Also like the accent but not sure how the general public and officialdom deal with them.

Mumofgirls2017 · 09/02/2024 15:08

We were close to using Clara, Ivy, Skye, piper, Athena, wren. If we’d had boys they’d probably have been Torin, Fletcher, river, elio or Osiris

Waggytail · 09/02/2024 15:10

I have a James. The only other male name floated was Raphael, but we decided that was a little too fancy.

If he was a girl we liked Isabella, Anna and Anastasia.

TwoWithCurls · 09/02/2024 15:12

Boy's names:

Tobias
Roman

Girl's names:
Wren
Betty
Ruby
