What names didn't you use?

And why?

The names I liked if either DS were to be a girl included;

Isis (obviously could not use, sadly)
Leveret which I maintain is a fabulous name but DH did not agree
Hebe
Hera

DH did not like either

Boys

Tobermory (love it still but it sounded wierd with our surname which rhymes!)
Agamemnon (we are not Greek and it was a bit of a pregnant hormone name)
Ezekiel (DH vetoed).

Both DCs have quite normal fairly old fashioned names of the David / Stephen variety which i love because it's unusual on 14 and 12 year olds now.

Gosh, lots:

Boys:
Elias
Nathaniel
Thorsten
Ulric

Girls:
Jocelyn
Livia
Lilith
Genevieve
Elinor

We went with fairly unusual options for all 3 DC.

Fridaysgirl17 · 09/02/2024 18:53

Joshua & Jayden on our first, none on our second he had his name from day one never changed or had any other. I really liked Jayden but my ex didn't do we kept thinking we went with a j name but it's a family name which felt right & fits my son perfectly, ironically my ex went on to call his son he had with the other woman Jayden 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 09/02/2024 18:54

We had our son’s name picked out from when we first started dating so we never really considered any other names for him. We liked the names Isaac, Ethan and Daniel as well but not as much as the name we’d chosen years ago. If he were a girl he would have been Lucy and we’ll probably still use that if we ever have a girl.

SnowAndIceLobelia · 09/02/2024 18:59

I forgot Wren. That was on the list for a dd if ds1 had been a girl. I still love it. I must have a preference for flora and fauna names because I live Rowan for a girl but not a boy for some reason.

HuntingoftheSnark · 09/02/2024 19:21

I had a girl so didn't use Conrad or Byron. Also decided to save Cordelia for the cat.

MythicBish · 09/02/2024 19:33

I fully admit that I have really weird taste in names (from really out there hippy names to classical etc) but when it comes to it, I’m not brave enough to bite the bullet and choose a name i love, in case it’s too out there! we have two dc with ‘normal’ name’s albeit outside the top 100.

@Schum Dashiell is a great name!

helpnohelpno · 09/02/2024 19:48

I liked Sofia and Ivy for a girl both of which dh vetoed. Genuinely can't remember if dh liked any girls names. He like Alfie and Harry for a boy but we went with my choice

Bentoforthehorde · 09/02/2024 19:55

Dc1: Seraphine for a girl, Dino as unused boy name.
Dc2: Daisy for a girl, Felix as unused boy name.
Dc3: family name which was used for a girl, Elijah for a boy.
Dc4: Zephanie for a girl, Fox as unused boys name.

Bentoforthehorde · 09/02/2024 19:58

Just realised it looks like I've put my kids names there, but I've just worded it badly
Dc1, 2 and 4 are boys, dc3 is a girl. None of their names are on those lists.

notasillysausage · 09/02/2024 20:03

Ezekiel, it just didn’t suit him when he was born. Isla (our last name is a colour that would make this name sound ridiculous!) and Sadie for my youngest.

SkaneTos · 09/02/2024 21:17

Interesting topic!

@SnowAndIceLobelia
I have never heard the name Tobermory.
(I'm not from the UK or Ireland, though, so that might be why.)
What is the origin of that name?

TinyRebel · 09/02/2024 22:14

We absolutely loved the old English name ‘Wulfric’. The reality of my large, hairy, heavy metal-loving husband bellowing “Wolf-y” across the playground at some point was that there was the chance people might mistake us for white supremacist types, when nothing could be further from the truth!

Oh I don't think it is a person name.

Tobermory is a place name in Scotland. DH thought it was the longer name for Toby. (it's usually Tobias). I think Tobermory would be an excellent name, but our surname rhymes with 'Mory' so would never fly.

Leo - Tony Blair named his son Leo
Bjorn - would loved Scandinavian name. Not brave enough.
Ernest - not brave enough and not keen on Ernie as nn (twenty five years ago before Granny names became chic
Edward - very nearly used this, not sure why we didn’t now

Victoria - was a boy

PurBal · 10/02/2024 18:35

Boys:
Alexander
James
Benedict
Laurence (nn Laurie)
Adam
Elliot

Girls (neither of which were popular at the time):
Clara
Florence

Hibernatalie · 10/02/2024 18:45

Felix (she was a girl)
Margot (he was a boy)

Edie or Edison (we stopped at 2)

Namechangesab · 10/02/2024 18:56

RuthW · 09/02/2024 12:19

Phoebe - we decided on another name.

Frederick - she was a girl. This was 30 years ago so unheard of for babies then.

Was it?

I had four in my year at school and am mid 30s!

Nocoffeenotalkie · 11/02/2024 18:10

For DD1
I vetoed: Holly, Laila, Milly
DH vetoed : Florence, Charlotte, Eleanor

If she'd been on time her name would have been Esmè but she went over and by the time I gave birth, I hated it!
Very, very happy with the names we picked though.

Underestimated4 · 11/02/2024 21:12

Adeline and Tabitha for girls I always loved.

Ryder and Bobby for boys.

Underestimated4 · 11/02/2024 21:15

SwoopingIsBad · 09/02/2024 17:36

Niamh, Connie and Ada. Had three boys.

I have a Niamh, I loved that name since I was a little girl and always knew if I had a daughter she’d be called it.
