Thoughts on Hugo

Hi, we’re expecting a baby boy in a few weeks and finding it so hard to find a name we both like. Hugo is as close as we’ve come and while I do like it, a quick search on here has shown me it’s not super popular. The posh vibes don’t bother me but wondering if there were alternatives someone could recommend that we could look at. I love Rafa (Rafael) but husband says absolutely no. Also like Leo, Luca and Felix but they seem a bit meh. Any suggestions welcome & also if anyone has a Hugo, let me know you don’t regret your decision 😂 thank you!

I like it.

But regardless of people say, if you find a name you both like then you should go with it. Doesn't really matter what others think. Everyone is going to have some opinion, whatever name you choose.

If you're both in agreement that it's a nice name then chances are it's not going to be damaging for the child! (That's why it's best both parents have a say!)

Hugo is a lovely name.

Perfect

Prizefighter · 08/02/2024 17:15

You Go Hugo

sweet. And also manly when older.

Hugo is a lovely name.

I really liked it and proposed it for ds but sadly dh rejected it. I think it’s a great name.

Janetheplain · 08/02/2024 17:18

I have a Hugo who is now 6. I love the name, it’s not super common so no one else in the school has the same name but not obscure either. He also loves it when people wear Hugo boss clothing as it has his name on it and he thinks he’s the boss 🤣

DesertSnow · 08/02/2024 17:19

It's a nice name. Try not to worry about what other people think. There will always be people who dislike whatever name you pick

InTheRainOnATrain · 08/02/2024 17:21

Love it but it’s super popular here. Not that that’s a bad thing but just so you know! Probably area dependent though? We’re in SW London with a lot of French families locally that I’m guessing want a French name that also sounds good in English.

Onelife2024 · 08/02/2024 17:25

I really like it! It does give slightly posh vibes, but it’s on the rise and lots of names that used to be considered posh are now very commonly used without sounding at all pretentious (e.g. Oliver, Toby, Henry).

Strong boys name!! I love it

BeaLola · 08/02/2024 17:40

Love it - would only not use it if my surname was Hughes or similar as I think Hugo Hughes would be a bit of a mouth call

Easy to spell and not overly used - great choice

Nicebloomers · 08/02/2024 17:49

It was on my baby boy name list. It’s a great name. Come back and update when he arrives!

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/02/2024 17:53

Lovely name.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 08/02/2024 19:01

I have a Hugo. I've loved it for years.

sunflowerpinks · 08/02/2024 19:10

I don't like it at all.

Hugh is much nicer imo.

RosaSkyes · 08/02/2024 19:16

I’ve always liked Hugo. My boys list had nearly all the ones you’ve listed on, plus-

Gabriel
Herbie
Lowen
Lucas

Nephew's name, I love it. Also easy to write- Alexander has a tougher time!

RuthW · 08/02/2024 19:26

Hugo is lovely.

And I also Like the shortening too

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/02/2024 19:57

I really like it. We almost went with it and sometimes regret not doing.

This is what we ended up going with instead of Hugo

ducksinarow123 · 08/02/2024 20:07

I have a Hugo so completely biased. But he's a teen now and sometimes refers to himself as Hug-Oh when he wants to give (or receive) a big bear hug. Still completely in love with his name

Veggie1961 · 08/02/2024 20:09

Am not a fan , but you should name your child with whatever name you love.

BarelyLiterate · 08/02/2024 20:12

Hugo is an excellent, classic name. Cute for a boy. Masculine for an adult man. Definitely non-chavvy. It’s a winner.

Monkeytownten · 08/02/2024 20:13

Hi @FlatWhite2
I think you might have recently responded to a post I made about this name almost a year ago…hello! Our Hugo is about eight months now, and thought you might like to know that we absolutely love his name: and so does everybody who meets him! He’s a really happy, bubbly, little boy, and the name feels like a warm hug. It suits him perfectly! (In fact, he has generally become known as “Hugs” to most of our friends and family).

I think it just took me a little bit of time to get used to it fitting a real human being, but I couldn’t think of him being anything else now!

We travel a lot, and it works really well in so many languages/countries, its easy to say and to spell, has a wonderful history and a wonderful meaning. If you love it, go for it! we were really happy with our choice, and I think you might be too.

TrishTrix · 08/02/2024 20:20

Posh but nice.

Don't know any wee ones and only one adult Hugo. Don't really understand why as there are lots of other classic names kicking about.
