What nickname would you use for Doris?

Helenloveslee4eva · 06/02/2024 10:05

Dorrie or dot

Sycamoretrees · 06/02/2024 10:05

Doris short for Dorothy? Dot, Dotty, D, Thea?

AuntiePathy · 06/02/2024 10:05

Dodie

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 06/02/2024 10:06

I know a Dotty - she's 2 years old.

Zoomerang · 06/02/2024 10:06

Please don’t call a baby Doris!

DandelionPockets · 06/02/2024 10:06

Dot

poolcrew · 06/02/2024 10:15

I have a friend with a Doris who calls her Diddy or Do. As a big Gavin and Stacey fan, the name always makes me think "Oh, Doris, where's the salad?"

Magicisuponus · 06/02/2024 10:20

I’ve always liked the name Doris, but dh absolutely vetoed it! I’m not British so maybe it helps I don’t feel the old fashioned vibe attached to the name Doris.
Dot would be the most obvious nickname I’d say, but you could probably use Do (pronounced ‘Dough’)?

Minglemangle007 · 06/02/2024 10:22

Nana?

TeeBee · 06/02/2024 10:23

Dore or Dot.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 06/02/2024 10:23

Do (said as doe) is the only one I've heard. It's a short name anyway, I don't think it needs or lends itself to a nickname.

Branleuse · 06/02/2024 10:24

I think id go with Dot.
I know someone with a Doris and I think they just dont shorten it. I think its a cute name.

KnickerlessParsons · 06/02/2024 10:26

Dodie is short for Dorothy, but would work for Doris too

squashyhat · 06/02/2024 10:26

Dolly

DifficultBloodyWoman · 06/02/2024 10:27

Dory. As in ‘Finding Dory’, the sequel to ‘Finding Nemo’.

dorisdoughnut · 06/02/2024 10:28

Dorrie or Dot

Enko · 06/02/2024 10:28

Zoomerang · 06/02/2024 10:06

Please don’t call a baby Doris!

Why not? It's cute and unusual yet everyone will know the name and not hard to spell.

ajandjjmum · 06/02/2024 10:33

My Mum was a Doris and absolutely hated it. She was always known as Dot to her friends, and in her later years was known as Dottie.

NicknameForDoris · 06/02/2024 10:48

@Enko this is exactly why we like the name

I would disown my parents as soon as legally possible if they lumbered me with Doris.

Sorry, ma and pa, but those ties would be cut.

todayshappening · 06/02/2024 11:01

I think you mean shortening. Nickname is something completely different

Westfacing · 06/02/2024 11:04

DeeDee

New2024 · 06/02/2024 11:06

Dodie which I like more than Doris

FloofCloud · 06/02/2024 11:08

I'm not really a fan of old lady names, but in parts of SE England a girlfriend is called a Doris so would put me off
I'd probably use a NN like Dixie because it's cute and different

Needmorelego · 06/02/2024 11:12

I don't think you can shorten it really.
Nicknames usually evolve so if I had a Doris I would probably be all sing songy with the name and it would go from :
"Come here Doris Horis Moris"
Which would turn into "DoriHoriMori".
Which would turn into "MoriMoo"
Which would turn into a 12 year old randomly saying "Why does everyone call me Moo?"
