This is the only name we can agree on, what do you think?

I was coming in here, saying ",Hitler Youth", glad to see I have been beaten to it!

I didn’t know it was cash in Welsh, so that’s good to know. We aren’t Welsh so I’m not too concerned about that one. There’s lots of British names that don’t quite sound right in other languages, but this is exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to find out by posting so thank you

It does, but I know two young girls called Arian and you'd never think "omg they named their kid 'cash'". It's obviously 'silver' when used as a name, and is seen as a very beautiful name too.

Thanks everyone. Interesting to hear the aryan concerns.
I’m surprised though as it isn’t spelt or pronounced the same way.

If it helps I’ve never thought of it that way before reading this thread. The one we know is part Iranian so I’ve always just taken it as different culture, different naming style!

I would.
You pp that you are learning Welsh, so it might not strike you as being a strange name to use as a name. People saying it as Ah-yun or Arry-an would wind me up.

wizzbitt · 03/02/2024 13:53

I keep on seeing Adrian which I accept is my issue. Also read it as Aryan. So hard no. I love the Welsh meaning though.

KirstenBlest · 03/02/2024 13:54

What? Money?

momonpurpose · 03/02/2024 13:59

heldinadream · 02/02/2024 22:05

It's not a name.
It's very close to 'Aryan' which has racist connotations.
So no.

This. All I hear is Aryan and I suspect most will as well. I'm sorry but unless you are white supremacists I would stay clear. People will judge the name and assume you ate racist.

user1492757084 · 03/02/2024 14:09

No.
Consider ..

Arianne
Ariane
Ariadne
Adrienne

Adrian
Aran

Legoninjago1 · 03/02/2024 14:19

No from me too...
If it's an Indian name you'd like how about Narayan?

KirstenBlest · 03/02/2024 14:25

@user1492757084 , it's a DS.

Arian / Aryan is a very common name amongst Indians, Muslims and others - just as an FYI for all those suggesting that western European connotations are all that matter.

No, not all that matters but perhaps a consideration in a majority white, western country. Obviously.

Evvyjb · 03/02/2024 14:41

I teach in the UK and have taught MANY lovely Aryan/variations. Lovely, cultural name.

Some people need to "give their head a wobble"

Dhekaksnsjellfv · 03/02/2024 14:43

For reference, for us it means ‘noble’
and it’s pronounced as in Ariana but without the A at the end.
So usually Ar (as in car) - Ree-An
or Ari (as in Harry)-Ann
but never air ree an.

Aryan is a popular Indian boys’ name. Not everything is about white culture…

Exactly I know Hindus and Muslims called Aryan. It's not seen as a blonde hair, blue eyes, Nazi youth name by them!

Sure. But I was trying to give an early factual post to avoid people making offensive comments about a common name that a lot of people have or have given to their sons.

I wouldn't call my son Aryan or Arian. But I'd also avoid saying to the parent of an Arian "your kid's name reminds me of the Hitler youth" because that's unhelpful and offensive.

But if a dc is blonde and blue eyed the Indian aspect won't be the one people think about will it

wherearemywellingtons · 03/02/2024 15:57

My first thought was that you might be white supremacists - sorry! When I read your comments, it became clear that that's not the case, but if I'm honest, if I met a baby Arian I'd probably wonder if maybe his parents were a bit ignorant and didn't know the negative, racist connotations of the name? Orion is very similar but without the white supremacist vibe.

wherearemywellingtons · 03/02/2024 15:59

As for Aryan being common in India - my family are Indian but we don't live in India, so when choosing a name for our children we had to ensure that none of the names on the list were funny/rude/offensive etc. in the culture the child would be growing up in. Surely that goes without saying?

It's also common in west London. Because people don't need to prioritize whether other people might think they are white supremacists, when they clearly aren't. It's not funny/rude/offensive. It's a name.

Well we know a few Hindu and Muslim boys called Aryan in the UK. I think most people are capable of working out that they're not white supremisists so it's fine.

How about Arjun?

if you live in the UK, it is essential to understand the cultural, historical and political issues with such a name. Would you call him Adolf?

Interestingly aryan is about the 308th most popular name on darkgreener more popular than names like Stephen
Arian is gaining popularity but is around 790th
so at least they’re established names that many people will have come across.

This has been really useful thanks everyone. We still love the name, it’s very obvious we aren’t white supremacists, and most people will surely hear the name rather than see (and mispronounce) the name, and so they will know it’s not Aryan. However I do take the point, and need to consider if this is something we are happy to accept for a name that means a lot to us. As I said we are in a multicultural area and I don’t think it’s going to be the same problem some people are describing, most of the people who have actually met an Arian seem to think it’s not a problem, but it’s still important for us to consider it. We’ve not got long left but will see if there’s anything else we like just as much.
