This is the only name we can agree on, what do you think?

OP posts:

I know it's a traditional name in other cultures, but there's also no way I would saddle a child with it. Anyone thinking it meant Aryan would be wrong, but I wouldn't want anyone thinking that about my name.

Arian / Aryan is a very common name amongst Indians, Muslims and others - just as an FYI for all those suggesting that western European connotations are all that matter.

I think if the OP was Muslim or Welsh she probably wouldn’t be asking..

And if she isn’t, then I wouldn’t

PaulCostinRIP · 02/02/2024 23:16

It reminds me of Roald Dahl jokes about his parents not being able to spell Ronald!

Only this time it's Adrian.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 02/02/2024 23:21

why not Aaron?
as with others it's too close to aryan.

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 02/02/2024 23:24

Is it pronounced lie the female name (possibly French) Ariane? Like Arry-Ann (arry like harry)

windysocks · 02/02/2024 23:29

Have you ever had a history lesson? Very hitlerish name

UsualChaos · 02/02/2024 23:37

Bedroomconfig · 02/02/2024 22:09

Means silver in Welsh. So I didn't immediately think of Aryan personally. I've never heard it used as a name in my bit of Wales though.

I know two in my bit! I like it.

MaloneMeadow · 03/02/2024 00:08

I think it’s a nice name and I know one but to be honest I do think it’s too close to Aryan race connotations

Terrrence · 03/02/2024 00:50

I immediately thought why not just call him Adolf? I've googled it as a name and see it is popular in other countries. Fair enough. If you are in the UK I wouldn't use it anyway as why give your child a name you know people will have very negative associations with?

It’s pronounced more like Ari-in with less emphasis on the second syllable. Not like Ariane

Babla · 03/02/2024 01:35

No.. makes me think of Nazis

Songiii · 03/02/2024 01:41

I think about nazis when I hear this name. If your child is European looking people may think about it’s racist connotation too

Fetaa · 03/02/2024 03:49

I know two Arion’s, one a 40 year old, the other a toddler. It’s a beautiful name and easy to pronounce/spell. I also like Aaron but dislike Adrian.

SD1978 · 03/02/2024 04:14

Is your background white Brittish? I think you'd find, as many have here, that there could be a misunderstood link between the name and aryan nation, white supremacy.. If culturally you're from somewhere different, maybe not so much,

Dinoland · 03/02/2024 04:19

This is a classic case of why it is always important to sense check names before you name your children!

Meredusoleil · 03/02/2024 04:42

I know of 3 boys called Aryan or Aryon (similar pronunciation). 2 have a parent from Mauritius and 1 has Pakistani parents. Don't know the Welsh version personally.

I do like the female version of Ariana. Not Arian as much tbh.

garlictwist · 03/02/2024 05:26

Arianne is a french (female) name. I agree Arian is a bit close to Aryan for my liking.

PurpleOrchid42 · 03/02/2024 05:38

Arion would be a much better choice!!!

littleburn · 03/02/2024 06:20

I know a lovely Arian, but they're of Kurdish heritage. I'm white British and wouldn't give my child that name, for the reasons already mentioned.

Toomuchgoingon79 · 03/02/2024 08:58

Just no

Gwenhwyfar · 03/02/2024 09:16

Bedroomconfig · 02/02/2024 22:21

Well yes, it's a UK site and Wales is part of the UK. Arian is pronounced completely differently to Aryan and doesn't have that connotation.

Yes, but as mentioned it means silver and money in Welsh and isn't a name.

Now just seen Catch's post that she knows some. If it's become a name in Wales, that's a very new development that I hadn't heard about. I would laugh if someone told me they were called money.

Gwenhwyfar · 03/02/2024 09:17

CatchHimDerry · 02/02/2024 22:24

As PP said it’s silver in Welsh, we have a few around here, it’s not considered in any way unusual nor with negative connotations in Welsh speaking circles / schools etc

Definitely unusual for me as a mid-forties Welsh speaker who has never heard of it as a name.

Lifeinlists · 03/02/2024 09:26

The one I know is pronounced Arriarn with emphasis on the 'arn' bit.
Pakistani heritage.

BoobyDazzler · 03/02/2024 09:32

I think it’s a really pretty name and I’d probably use it unless the child was likely to be tall, blonde and have blue eyes just because of the historic connotations and the fact that kids can be awful!

CatchHimDerry · 03/02/2024 09:32

@Gwenhwyfar there’s not many, granted, but one or two in the schools DH has taught at over the years

By no means the weirdest.

I posted previously that next door teacher has an Allanfa in their Welsh secondary. I didn’t believe them, it was 100% true.

And a Sirius Black 😂

I don’t dislike Arian, doubt DH would allow it as it would be seen as more “money” than “silver”

He sense checks all my suggestions as I’m only a leaner and he’s 1st language
