Help me find a not too weird name

FinallyPregnant23 · 30/01/2024 23:49

I have a REALLY common name - first, middle AND surname, and I’ve always really, really hated it.

I’m currently pregnant with my first baby girl, after TTC for 10+ years, during that time I’ve seen a lot of the more usable unusual names I like become really popular, and I’m struggling to find anything I like now. Some names I love but won’t use:

Aroha - it’s a Māori word/name and neither DH or I are Maori
Ngaio - same as above
Snow - I LOVE this but DH would never let me use it as a first name, he’s considering it as a middle
Meadow - I think this is the most reasonable but DH doesn’t like it
Moon - Luna is popular so I think it’s justified but DH says too hippy for a first name

I do like some of the popular names, I mean they’re popular for a reason, I like the sound of Sophie/a and Olivia for example but could never let myself use them because of how popular they are.

So now you know just how weird I like my names, is there any you could think of that might satisfy my need for an unusual name but that also are acceptable to use? I don’t want to give my daughter the opposite problem to me and have her hate her name because it’s so weird!

Google Celtic names. lots of unusual, but lovely, names. I just tried listing but MN keeps reloading and wiping as I’m listing for some reason.
Congratulations on your pregnancy.

How about Seren, Aster or Stella, all of which mean star and all beautiful imo. Or Serafina - a bit fancier but very pretty.

Or names that mean happiness: Allegra, Freya, Joy, Blythe, Hilary, Felicity

I adore the name Aroha but that's because I know someone of that name who is very lovely in every way.

Or an old name that could deserve a revival - Angela (angel) or Sylvia/Silvie (means woodland spirit)

ConcertaFirstTimer · 31/01/2024 00:03

Bird names are lovely too: Robyn, Wren, Paloma (dove)

I’m sorry OP but Snow, Meadow & Moon are all ridiculous, you’re naming a child who has to go out into the real world, not a doll. I agree with your DH! In my opinion using a Māori name with no connections is very odd as well. If you don’t want your daughter to feel conscious of having a weird/very unusual name then don’t give her one. Plenty of typical but less common names about!

How about:

Celeste
Astrid
Gaia
Autumn
Summer
Amber
Fleur
Isla
Jasmine
Wren
Fern
Robyn
Hazel
Ruby
Estelle
Pippa

All have a nature meaning to them which seems to be what you like

Even Jacinda Ardern used Aroha as a middle name, and neither she nor her husband are Maori - you could do that?

If you like the Ngaio sound (which to me is the name of a suburb...), what about Ngaire or Nyree (like Nyree Dawn Porter).

Queenmaker · 31/01/2024 02:23

Meadow is "ridiculous" but

Autumn
Summer
Amber
Fern
Wren
and Hazel are fine.

Somewhat of a contradiction here! 🙄😂

Queenmaker · 31/01/2024 02:24

Naomi ?

All of the above are well known and commonly used girls names.. the only Meadow I’ve ever known was a pony.

Arelie - Irish version of Aurelia.
Former means light, second is Latin for ‘light’
Ophelia
Frederika
Hanne
Anastasia

I’ve taught a Meadow so that’s probably the least weird option to me!
I would avoid hard to pronounce names and they will forever be having to spell them to others/ correct them/ be frustrated by them!

sleepismyhobby · 31/01/2024 03:15

Echo is a lovely name I was thinking the other day

I have a Serafina! It means "Fire" or "Fiery one". It came down on the right side of unusual for me, in that it's a legit name, it's just not used very often.

FloofCloud · 31/01/2024 03:27

I know someone else called Barley which I always thought was lovely

Aria999 · 31/01/2024 04:04

Eira means ‘snow’ in Welsh. It’s pretty and you get to use Snow - albeit in a different language.
