Help me find a not too weird name

I have a REALLY common name - first, middle AND surname, and I’ve always really, really hated it.

I’m currently pregnant with my first baby girl, after TTC for 10+ years, during that time I’ve seen a lot of the more usable unusual names I like become really popular, and I’m struggling to find anything I like now. Some names I love but won’t use:

Aroha - it’s a Māori word/name and neither DH or I are Maori
Ngaio - same as above
Snow - I LOVE this but DH would never let me use it as a first name, he’s considering it as a middle
Meadow - I think this is the most reasonable but DH doesn’t like it
Moon - Luna is popular so I think it’s justified but DH says too hippy for a first name

I do like some of the popular names, I mean they’re popular for a reason, I like the sound of Sophie/a and Olivia for example but could never let myself use them because of how popular they are.

So now you know just how weird I like my names, is there any you could think of that might satisfy my need for an unusual name but that also are acceptable to use? I don’t want to give my daughter the opposite problem to me and have her hate her name because it’s so weird!

I thought Vesper was Latin for evening

Yes, it means evening in Latin.

It's also a cocktail 🍸

Fable! It’s my guilty name that DP will never let me use 😭 gorgeous and has beautiful ‘normal’ nicknames ‘Fay’ or ‘Belle’ should she grow up and want a more common name ❤️

Op, my name is very uncommon outside of the small community I was born in. I had surprised looks, people double checking, people misspelling/ mispronouncing it all my life.

I also think having a common name 20/30/40 years ago is different to having a popular name today - today the variety of names used is much bigger and even Evie may be the only one in her class, even though it is overused.

We wanted a well known name, not popular but not too out there. Something that can suit anybody and not invite any prejudice/ jumping to conclusions. Neutral name is an easy name to have.

If you like Snow what about Bianca/Blanca or Alba?

If you like Naomi what about Salome?

I agree with this

Meadow isn’t even unusual? My nephew goes to school with a couple. Similar to Summer, Robyn, Ferne, Hunter, Daisy…

And wow, if some of your children are going to struggle accepting someone with a name like Meadow then how are they going to cope in the real world?! Absolutely hilarious!

And how do these kids react to names from other cultures?

suggestions:

Cicely
Xanthe
Fiora
Lucia
Delphi
Olive
Ianthe
Peony
Saffron
Hazel
Posey
Nola

Good luck and good for you x

I don't think I'd like being called Daffodil

I think there are unusual names where people would think 'lovely name, very unusual'. And others where they would just think 'huh?!'

Fully agree with this. I think there’s a trend of parents selfishly giving their kids unusual names (and not the nice unusual) as a sort of shock factor these days

Marcipex · 10/02/2024 00:55

Lowenna, it’s a Cornish name that means ’a happy child’.

RogueFemale · 10/02/2024 01:11

How about Apple? (if you don't mind the association with Paltrow's daughter).
