Just that really 😊love the name but in the last few years it’s become popular and I don’t want a name that will become too popular (I know it’s a bit of an unknown!)
i have a name that was unusual when I was born and now it’s everywhere!
FYI we live outside Wales for context so guessing it’s not as usual in England 🤔

thank you in advance. X

I know one. He's about 20 now. It's a lovely name. I'm in Scotland as is he

sanityisamyth · 29/01/2024 23:28

Never heard it before I moved to Cardiff 4.5 years ago. I now know 4 of them!

JessPess · 29/01/2024 23:33

Lovely name, I think you’re right and it is being used more but it’s not common.
Having said that, I think I know of about 5 that are aged 3 or under, mostly from baby/toddler groups (I’m in Bristol, so close to the border) and one of my friend’s sons is also called that (in Sheffield).

ChocoChocoLatte · 29/01/2024 23:39

Yes. Several. Of Irish descent

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 23:45

@JessPess , it's common for Welsh speaking men. I know many aged between 30 and 60.

AppleDragon · 30/01/2024 00:05

My son is an Osian - we live in the North of England and we've never met another one. People love the name and English people can easily learn how to pronounce it.

@Beyondbeyondbeyond , the stress is different. Oisín is more Osh-EEN, Osian is OSH-ann (c.f. LEW-is/Lou-ISE)

Actually, the stress patterns of OIsín and similar names depends on what part of Ireland you're in. I think @Beyondbeyondbeyond is right and the NI pronunciation could sound quite similar to the Welsh one? Bit of a difference at the end all right. But still OSH-een vs OSH-ann?
They're different versions of the aame name anyway I think.

Heather37231 · 30/01/2024 00:15

I had never heard this name before today. We live in London.

CharlesChickens · 30/01/2024 00:17

Yes, I know loads.

zeddip · 30/01/2024 00:21

I know an Orion but never heard of Osion. I'm in England!

Alloveragain3 · 30/01/2024 00:22

I know none, though know several Oisíns

Elphame · 30/01/2024 00:43

A few. It’s quite common around here ( North Wales)

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2024 07:51

@TwirlBar , yes, they're versions of the same name. Osian & Nia or Oisín & Niamh

Siôr needs the circumflex.

😂. No chance I was looking how put a circumflex on at 11 o’clock at night whilst lying in bed

Igneococcus · 30/01/2024 10:03

My children are/were in clan Ossian at high school but I've never met anyone with that name.

Or just hold down your finger on the letter on an Apple touch screen keyboard and it gives you all the diacritic marks to scroll through @mum11970 (assuming you are on a phone or tablet if in bed). Does Android not do similar?

DesertSnow · 30/01/2024 10:56

The one I know is Welsh, about 30. He goes by 'Osh' as a nn

LadyEloise1 · 30/01/2024 12:59

There's a minister in the Irish government called Ossian but people continue to get it wrong and call him Oisín.
It must be really annoying.
But to be fair he is the only Ossian I have ever heard of.

urrrgh46 · 30/01/2024 12:59

It's VERY VERY popular in the Isle of Man.

Hopingforno2in2024 · 30/01/2024 13:00

I’m in north wales so millions 😂

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2024 13:05

@urrrgh46 , do they use the Osian spelling on the Isle of Man?

cheapskatemum · 30/01/2024 14:51

No, I've only seen the name on MN. Never met one IRL. Rural East Anglia

He pronounces it Oisín himself though.
I remember being surprised when I heard him say it once on some campaign thing.
Unless he's just given up😂
