Just that really 😊love the name but in the last few years it’s become popular and I don’t want a name that will become too popular (I know it’s a bit of an unknown!)
i have a name that was unusual when I was born and now it’s everywhere!
FYI we live outside Wales for context so guessing it’s not as usual in England 🤔

thank you in advance. X

No

Snowdate · 29/01/2024 22:23

Thanks everyone for your responses, super helpful!
i didn’t expect it to be derailed by having to justify choosing god forbid a non English name.

For anyone interested you pronounce it

Osh-anne

we are from south wales so this might vary if you’re north wales welsh speaker

Is it pronounced the same as the Irish name Oisín?

It's pronounced Oshan, with a short O.

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 22:25

I know a lot of men called Osian.

CaffiSaliMali · 29/01/2024 22:25

It's my favourite boy's name and DH likes it but refuses to use it due to pronunciation issues.

I don't know any Osians. I think people will quickly learn it (OSH-ann isn't hard to say once you know how).

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 22:25

Yes, OSH-ann, not OSH-un

Sgtmajormummy · 29/01/2024 22:27

I know a Scottish Ossian who did not take kindly to being called Oisín (know several of them) and pulled me up on it.
Same story different versions!

It’s a good name.

I know, it’s not tricky at all.☺️
maybe I should have gone for Llyr instead!

@Snowdate We live in England and our daughter has a "very Welsh" name. I don't know of anyone else with her name (except a famous Welsh singer) and I absolutely adore it. Not interested in if other people like it or not 😀

Onelife2024 · 29/01/2024 22:28

Lovely name. I don’t personally know anyone called it, but I know the name and how to pronounce it.

Dragonsandcats · 29/01/2024 22:29

i’ve never heard of it before. It has a nice sound.

In Southeast London and there’s a 7 year old Osian in DC’s class. Lovely name.

welshweasel · 29/01/2024 22:33

Go for it, Osian Dafydd is lovely. My eldest was born in England and has a very Welsh name, as you say, people will learn!

We're now back living in Wales and both kids still get their names mispronounced.

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 22:34

I like it but know far too many to use it. He'll get O-sigh-un or Osh-Ann a lot.
If you love it, use it.

HundredMilesAnHour · 29/01/2024 22:35

I know one, age 5, of Scottish & Vietnamese descent. London.

NewName24 · 29/01/2024 22:36

One who would likely be 25ish now (I knew him as a baby, child, and teen).
Living in England with Welsh speaking parents.

He did get very fed up of no-one knowing how to say it, or how to spell it, in truth. Of course you can name your baby a name that you love, but the people that have that name as their own are the ones who have to do most of the correcting people / getting called something different from their name / spelling it everywhere they go.

Mum2jenny · 29/01/2024 22:36

No, not a name I’ve heard

Quite a few as we live in Wales and randomly DS is in university in England and has a friend on his course from Surrey called Osian but he pronounces it Ocean as his parents had never heard it spoken.

I saw a woman on tv call Sian who pronounced it Cyan, clearly her parents hadn’t heard it spoken either.

I’ve only ever known one Osian and that was as a teenager growing up in Wales. Lovely name op.

BeastAngelMadwoman · 29/01/2024 22:36

I know loads of Osians- including my nephew, my plumber and several friends. Probably know more of them than of any other individual name. There were 15 at the school I used to teach at! Buuut I live in rural North Wales hence its popularity. And it’s popular for a reason as it’s a lovely name.

Scarletttulips · 29/01/2024 22:38

I also know 1 and he wasn’t very well behaved!

Snowdate · 29/01/2024 22:38

Yes I also saw something on TV calling her Cyan. 😬

It's Welsh - forget it. Not even popular in Wales except among teachers and civil servants
