Just that really 😊love the name but in the last few years it’s become popular and I don’t want a name that will become too popular (I know it’s a bit of an unknown!)
i have a name that was unusual when I was born and now it’s everywhere!
FYI we live outside Wales for context so guessing it’s not as usual in England 🤔

thank you in advance. X

It's Welsh - forget it. Not even popular in Wales except among teachers and civil servants

Sorry what???

One - in Scotland - under a year old. He has one Welsh parent.

I love the name.

I like it but know far too many to use it. He'll get O-sigh-un or Osh-Ann a lot.
If you love it, use it.

‘Osh Ann’ is the correct pronunciation, how do you think it’s pronounced?

LorlieS · 29/01/2024 22:42

@ScierraDoll Nobody likes a racist.

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 22:43

@ScierraDoll , I have 3 in my extended family. None are teachers and civil servants.

Nursemumma92 · 29/01/2024 22:43

I know one aged 4, in SW England.

BlueGrey1 · 29/01/2024 22:45

Never heard of it but I’m in Ireland, I have heard of Oisin, an Irish name

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 22:45

@mum11970 , The stress is on the Osh not the An. It's not like Joanne and Suzanne.

What a strange thing to say and totally wrong!

I know how to pronounce it being Welsh but don’t understand how Osh Anne is not stressing the Osh.

I know, it’s not tricky at all.☺️
maybe I should have gone for Llyr instead!

Give him Both Osian Llyr is nice.
Quite a few of Osian's around here but we are in Wales and Dd went to Welsh medium school.
Maybe iolo I used to ride a pony with that boy name and always had a soft spot for it.

Gettingbysomehow · 29/01/2024 22:54

I've never heard of that name it's very nice but he will be called Oz for the rest of his life.

Beyondbeyondbeyond · 29/01/2024 22:54

It really is like an NI version of Oisín if it is Osh ann.

Down south in Ireland Oisín is Ush een but up north it is Osh een. Maybe not quite ending with ann but they are very similar as I say them in my best NI accent.

Narwhalsh · 29/01/2024 22:56

Just to say I’ve lived in England and Scotland and wales with a (not very I don’t think!) welsh name and it does get frustrating all the mis-pronunciations. If you’ve got a straightforward surname it will help balance out but if you’ve also got an unusual name, tread carefully!

dapsnotplimsolls · 29/01/2024 22:58

I've been teaching in England for more than 20 years and I've never taught one!

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 22:58

@Beyondbeyondbeyond , the stress is different. Oisín is more Osh-EEN, Osian is OSH-ann (c.f. LEW-is/Lou-ISE)

Ah I see. It is a lovely name.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/01/2024 23:00

Yes, a teenager in W Yorks, also pronounced Ocean.

Fluffywhitecloudsinthesky · 29/01/2024 23:01

I have never heard of it before (not in Wales), but I don't think it's a hard name once you get the hang of it, so I like it.

ReadtheReviews · 29/01/2024 23:02

One when teaching. He'd be about 17 now.

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 23:03

Theyvegotatrex · 29/01/2024 23:04

I love the name. Welsh but now live in England. DD has Welsh name which constantly gets mispronounced but it’s not a big deal. She’s used to it now.

You could go for Taliesin, which I love or Sior. Osian is definitely one of the easier Welsh names to pronounce. I love Lois for a girl, there’s no chance of that being pronounced correctly in England 🤣

Dmsandfloatydress · 29/01/2024 23:07

I think its in the top 10 boys names in wales this year. Loads in Wales. Never heard it in the many years I lived in England though.

KirstenBlest · 29/01/2024 23:08

Siôr needs the circumflex.
