DH has suggested this. I never would've thought of it myself, I don't love it but I don't hate it either.

Thoughts?

No, it's like a nickname or a term of endearment - 'Sonny Jim' etc. It's not a proper name really. Give him a proper name.

Onelife2024 · 25/01/2024 19:08

I like it as a nn for another name, that way he can choose to use the full name when he’s older if he prefers, either a name with a “son” ending, e.g.

Samson
Harrison
Jackson

or a name beginning with S and ending in n, e.g.

Sebastian (my favourite)
Solomon

Horrendous. It like you just couldn’t be bothered to think of a name.

SirChenjins · 25/01/2024 19:19

I really dislike it - it’s right there with Frankie and Jesse. As @daisypond says, it’s like you couldn’t be bothered to think of a name for your son.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/01/2024 19:22

I think it sounds like you couldnt think of a "real" name.

However I do know a couple of Sonny's and I think one of Sophie Ellis Bextor's sons is a Sonny.

Personally I'd use a full name like Harrison and then use Sonny as a nn.

TenThousandSpoons · 25/01/2024 19:24

Absolutely hate this name.

thedefinitive · 25/01/2024 19:27

Yeah I think of Sonny Jim too - which is cute and it does make me smile but no, not a good choice

tokesqueen · 25/01/2024 19:39

Dreadful

MaloneMeadow · 25/01/2024 19:58

It might be cute on a newborn but not when he’s a 20 year old uni student looking for a professional job!

PicklesAndTequila · 25/01/2024 19:59

Awful.

viques · 25/01/2024 20:01

I had an Uncle Sonny, but he was really a David. It’s a nickname, usually I think because the boy has the same name as his dad,

This is funny- Sonny is my husband’s favourite name for our baby due next month and we have a Frankie!! Maybe they go well together then…..

Sonny Jim

It does sound slightly like you can’t be arsed ..

StarlightLime · 25/01/2024 20:33

It's a nickname, not an actual name. The Sonny I knew was actually called James.

SoulMole · 25/01/2024 20:36

I work with young offenders. Sonnys are very over represented!

SallyWD · 25/01/2024 20:39

I usually like very traditional names (Thomas Edward, Samuel etc) but I love Somny! Cool name but not out there.

Marcipex · 25/01/2024 20:41

Dreadful. As bad as Buddy.
Pick a proper name.

Winnipeggy · 25/01/2024 20:47

It's my first choice, I love it

ElevenSeven · 25/01/2024 20:47

Awful

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/01/2024 20:49

...and Cher. Wife-beater.

loml97 · 25/01/2024 20:49

I've always had a soft spot for Sonny (and Jesse), I thinks it's the clear affection it carries but think a man could wear it well too,

Moonshine5 · 25/01/2024 20:49

Love love love it

resm · 25/01/2024 20:51

I’ve heard it can be a nickname for a son with the same name as his father to differentiate between the two, like Junior.

sexnotgenders · 25/01/2024 20:54

Love it. Definitely gets my vote. But I know from past threads that the MN pearl clutchers hate both my kids's names with a passion so I may not be the best person to ask!

sexnotgenders · 25/01/2024 20:57

Oh and can we just stop with this 'make it a nn but give him a 'proper' name' nonsense. If you like the name, then just give them the damn name. Trying to work backwards from a nickname is one of the weirdest things
