Elsa???

My sister just named her newborn Elsa! I desperately tried to warn her of the consequences (Frozen jokes etc.) but she went ahead with it anyway. I think it’s a gorgeous name but too associated with Disney… what does everyone else think?

I agree with you, it’s a lovely name but people will think of frozen, I wouldn’t use it for this reason.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/01/2024 02:09

My personal opinion is it's awful and overdone to fucking death. It screams Disney Princess and probably always will.

DaftyLass · 22/01/2024 02:12

I am biased, as we have many generations of Elsa in our family, but I think it's beautiful.
No one blinks at an Alice, or Aurora, Belle or Charlotte....

Because those names are much nicer

Mintearo7 · 22/01/2024 02:46

I think she will get away with it as frozen is getting old now.

Kittylickingplate · 22/01/2024 02:50

I have a 26 year old Elsa. She loves her name. I actually chose it as Born Free was my favourite movie as a child.

Onelife2024 · 22/01/2024 06:03

I agree that the Elsa link to Frozen would put me off using it. However it does have a pretty sound and she can always go by Elsie later on if it bothers her.

BoleynMemories13 · 22/01/2024 06:53

I think it's your sister's baby, your sister's choice, so none of your business what we think.

If you were asking for opinions on a name you were considering I'd have no problems giving you my opinion but your sister isn't asking us what we think so it wouldn't feel right to comment on the name itself. If she and her partner are happy with their choice, that's all that matters.

Exactly. I don't understand these "Frozen jokes" comment either - do you go in life and decide to please everyone, including morons? Or, are you going in life and making jokes right in people faces?

Itsnamechange · 22/01/2024 07:00

Let it go op

PuttingDownRoots · 22/01/2024 07:02

Its a normal name. A lot less Disney than Ariel or Aurora...

If she has a sister called Anna it would be disney.

(They are making Frizen 3 currently... the association isn't going anywhere but its still a normal name)

I disagree, it’s still everywhere! My daughter went to a party with an Elsa entertainer this weekend. And frozen 3 comes out in the next couple of years I think.

that said, I taught an 11 year old Elsa last year. I don’t recall anyone teasing her about frozen. It’s not like Elsa is the villain! I also have an 11 year old Anna this year and never heard such a comment.

sashh · 22/01/2024 08:39

I must be showing my age because I thought, "the lion"?

toastofthetown · 22/01/2024 08:48

I think that whatever everyone thinks of the name Elsa (and I love it) an auntie has no say over the name of her niece and should keep her beak out.

As the parent of a 3yo girl who's Elsa obsessed I can confirm this isn't the case.

I really like the name but no I wouldn't use it.

lola8345 · 22/01/2024 08:52

I wouldn't use it. We had an auntie who declared she didn't like our name choice and offered alternatives 😂
Then had here own children and chose the two most used names that decade. I never said a word, but her son is one of twenty at primary🙄

Needmorelego · 22/01/2024 08:56

I think the name is really pretty. Does it matter if people think "ooh like in Frozen"?
Is that where your sister heard the name from? Because all little Elsa has to do when she's older is say "Yes - my mum watched the film and liked the name" ( or......"My mum has always been obsessed with Born Free so I got the name").
Why would anyone tease her or make jokes for being named the same as a film character?

purpleme12 · 22/01/2024 09:19

I like the name
Who cares if some people think of Frozen

wasanneofcleves · 22/01/2024 09:25

It's fine. It's a totally normal name. Yes there is an association with Frozen but who cares? It's a harmless kids movie. If I heard of a child called Elsa in my head I would think "oh like frozen" but then would think nothing more about it.

Excuse the pun but "let it go" OP 😁

BlackWitchyCat · 22/01/2024 09:26

We named our dog. Huge regret.

BlackWitchyCat · 22/01/2024 09:26

Because of the movie I should say. Dd was 4 she's 13 now.

Beginningless · 22/01/2024 09:29

I’d worry less about the Frozen link, like pps say there are loads of names that applies to. Kids tease for all kinds of things or she might get extra respect from some because of it! But for me it’s just a ‘meh’ boring, common name (apologies to those with Elsa’s, I’m sure they are not boring)

Sunnysideupagain · 22/01/2024 09:29

Elsa is a pretty common name in Scandinavian countries ( hence its use in Frozen)

It’s a gorgeous name. It’s not like it’s Aurora, which is far more likely to have Disney links..

DuchessOfSausage · 22/01/2024 09:29

I like it - as a short form of Elizabeth. Aurora is dreadful.

wasanneofcleves · 22/01/2024 09:38

There are two Aurora's at my DDs nursery. Neither of them get teased and no-one has ever commented on their names. Neither of them are particularly girlie and I don't think either of them were named for Disney. People move on from other people's kids names pretty quickly, there are more important things to worry about.
