Thoughts on these M names for a boy?

Murray
Mackinley
Malcolm

We love all 3, but can't decide which one to go for. Our surname is one syllable.

Not keen on any of those - sorry. Malcolm is probably the least bad.

MamaBearsss · 19/01/2024 22:47

Sorry they are awful!!!

Scarletttulips · 19/01/2024 22:51

All are awful

Murry popular and dull

Mackinley - never met one - Mack for short?

Malcolm - really?

Why not

Martin
Macauley
Mallory
Marcus

I love Murray 10/10 and Malcolm 10/10.

Others ..
Michael
Montagu - Monty
Mitchell
Murdoch - Murdo

whydouask · 19/01/2024 22:57

Thank you, I'm not overly keen on any of the other suggestions.

So Mackinley is an unpopular vote then? That's a shame I love it so much.

My DH's favourite is Malcolm, think we might be leaning towards this one.

If you hadn't realised we are wanting a Scottish name and we'd like it to begin with M as it's a family tradition.

OP posts:
Wictc · 19/01/2024 23:01

I like Mackinley the best.

DinaofCloud9 · 19/01/2024 23:03

Malcolm is awful. I'd say Mackinley is the nicest.

Copperoliverbear · 19/01/2024 23:04

I like Mackinley out of those

whydouask · 19/01/2024 23:05

Wow, Mackinley back on top!

Mackinley as a first name seems more American than Scottish to me. (I personally haven't met anyone Scottish with a Mac/Mc first name but I have met a few Americans).

Scottish M names that I can think of -
Munro
Mungo
Menzies
Maxwell

NuffSaidSam · 19/01/2024 23:23

They're all fairly terrible.

I guess Malcolm is the least awful.

Although Mackinley is probably more 'cool'. I think he'd fit in amongst his peer group more with that one, lots of surnames as first names at the moment.

Linzi2377 · 19/01/2024 23:26

I really like Mackinley..theres Mallachi too?

CharlotteMakepeace · 19/01/2024 23:39

Mackenzie?
Macalister?
Macaulay?

SheilaFentiman · 19/01/2024 23:55

if M and Scottish is a family tradition, have you got ancestral names to draw on?

are biblical names eg Michael or Mark just as likely to be found in Scotland as England?

Pozz · 20/01/2024 00:09

Mitch
Mark
Mumford
Marvin
Mervin
Mackenzie
Mo
Marcus
Marco
Midge (Ure - Scottish)
Mack
Marrick
Mel
Mick

LadyGAgain · 20/01/2024 00:16

Acknowledging that it's a matter of personal preference but OP has asked.

Murray ...mint
Malcolm is a very old name and not one that needs to come back. In the same bracket as Clive, Keith and Norman.
The other one is awful.

Mark/Marc/markus/marcus
Myles
Matthew/Mattie/matteus
Mal
Monty/Montgomerie

mathanxiety · 20/01/2024 00:21

They're all lovely.

I don't think you could go wrong by drawing one out of a hat.

PiggieWig · 20/01/2024 00:21

Monty
Malachi
Micky
Michael
Marcus

Definitely not Malcolm!!

PizzaPastaWine · 20/01/2024 00:28

Please don't call a child Malcolm in 2024.

Babla · 20/01/2024 01:42

Awful!

Babla · 20/01/2024 01:43

Murdo?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 20/01/2024 01:50

None are to my personal taste but they are far from the worst names suggested in the thread (I definitely wouldn’t saddle a child with the name Mungo for example). If I had to rank them from most liked to least liked:

MacKinley
Murry
Malcolm

Ultimately it doesn’t matter what anybody else says though, no names are to everybody’s taste. Go with whatever you and your husband like best and if you can’t decide wait until your son arrives and see what seems to suit him best, you don’t have to know his name in advance.

Kiwiburgh · 20/01/2024 04:18

Murray is my favourite out the three. My favourite scortish boy name begining with an M though is Maxwell.

IBE45 · 20/01/2024 04:43

I think Murray is the least bad. Does it have to be a M name?
