I love this name so much and want to name our baby, due in a few weeks, this.
My DH says it's a beautiful name but he doesn't want to use it as uts 'political'.
I think that's nonsense because it's a very old name of a goddess and also of one of the moons of Jupiter. Yes people might also associate it with Europe the geographical area but I do not see the problem there either as girls get named things like Asia, America and Ireland for example. What's the difference?
He says it's contentious because of the referendum in the UK but I honestly don't see how that is an issue. Europe as a geographical area has existed for a long time its not just a political union. And surely people will not still be up in arms about the referendum when my daughter is an adult? I think it's a silly reason not to use this beautiful name.
We are both agreed we want a space/heavens themed names. He has been suggesting the names of other moons. But not only is Europa a beautiful name I think it's one of the most beautiful moons too.. covered in ocean.
Do people really think Europa is a 'politically charged' name?

I wouldn't have said politically charged though I can see why. It does sound like a hotel or conference centre though!

Pixilicious1 · 17/01/2024 20:24

It doesn’t really matter what we think, if your husband doesn’t want to call your daughter this, for whatever reason, surely his opinion counts?
IMO it’s not a nice name but not politically charged.

sockmuncher · 17/01/2024 20:26

Europa Hotel Belfast. The most bombed hotel in Europe EVER during the troubles.

It's not a name I would call a child.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 17/01/2024 20:26

It’s rather bullish.

Doppelgangers · 17/01/2024 20:26

There's literally no point in our opinions on whether we like it or not. The simple fact is your husband doesn't want to use it so it's off the table.

No just makes me think of the football tournament UEFA Europa League

If your DH is saying no, that’s it. If he said a name you weren’t happy with, would you want him finding a bunch of random people to persuade you you’re wrong?

It’s not a nice name anyhow.

supersonicginandtonic · 17/01/2024 20:29

@heyduggee12345 I came on to say the same 😂

riotlady · 17/01/2024 20:29

Uhhh you know the story with the bull, right?

Mitsky · 17/01/2024 20:30

It’s like calling your child Fifa or Premier-league

(it might not be, I don’t know anything about football)

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 17/01/2024 20:32

I'd assume the child's parents were feeling extremely bitter about Brexit.

Seriously, though, I think it's right that your husband gets to veto names he isn't comfortable with.

TinyYellow · 17/01/2024 20:33

I would expect everyone to assume you’re anti Brexit. Not that that would be a bad thing, but probably best not to announce your political stance through your child.

This was my first thought too.

It's a no from me!

VeryQuaintIrene · 17/01/2024 20:35

She was raped by Zeus. Just no.

Doublethecookies · 17/01/2024 20:36

I'm definitely not going to name the child something without my husbands consent! It's just he said the name was beautiful but his concern is its political... so I wanted to see if people generally felt that way about it

@VeryQuaintIrene

My DH and I both have ancient Greek names ourselves and they both have intense stories

Sorry, sounds like an airline.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 17/01/2024 20:39

It sounds very European.....

Thinking Eurovision, football, IKEA, French fries.

Bookworm1111 · 17/01/2024 20:39

Isn't it the name for a car hire firm?

VestPantsandSocks · 17/01/2024 20:41

I was just wondering the same thing!

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn’t say politically charged, but I really dislike it as a persons name.

Doublethecookies · 17/01/2024 20:42

And the name my DH likes the best is another moon name which is also the name of a princess raped by Zeus.. so clearly that aspect is not what puts him off
