Is Morgan American sounding/Chavvy on a girl?

I'm aware that Morgan is a Welsh name but I know it was very popular for girls in the US about 25 years ago, would you assume anything if you heard it on a girl?

I prefer more modern names over traditional names and me and dh love Morgan for a girl but our family members seem to think it's odd. It been slightly more popular for boys in the UK so maybe that's why but don't want it to come across as (I hate this word) "chavvy". A lot of the comments about it from our family were that it sounds very "American sounding" for a girl. I'm not sure if I should take that as an insult or not

We like the name so we will probably choose it either way but I know people are very honest on here so I would appreciate your thoughts?

If you love it, use it. I think it’s really nice. The Morgan I know is always smiling so I have a positive association with the name.

Yes, it is a surname and in the UK we do not generally use surnames as forenames. You can if you want of course but there are plenty of really nice names around, so why go American? No offence to Americans, what they do is up to them.

Yes. Although I’m old enough to remember the brand/shop so that might have coloured my opinion.

I don't like it and think it's quite dated. I have a Welsh partner so it's a shame it was popular so now feels dated.

It's a lovely name. I always think of Morgan La Fey, or Morgana, Morgaine, from Arthurian legends. It's neither American nor 'chavvy' (I hate when people call names this).

Even if it’s dated now does that mean it will be in 20 years?

I’ve only heard it used for boys around here, and I like it for a boy, but I could get used to it for a girl I think. How about Megan as an alternative? Megan is one of my favourite names

I prefer Morgana, it's more obviously feminine.

I love it. I also like Meredith and Merryn as similar-ish names.

Morgan was on our list for dd1. It's in the family. We didn't use it but I still love it for a girl! I don't think of it as "of a time" personally, maybe because the person we would have been naming dd after was very old.

I don’t like it personally but I wouldn’t say it’s odd. I’ve known many female Morgans and only a couple that are male. It’s a perfectly normal name for a girl in my opinion. If you like it, go for it.

I always think of her, as well. I prefer Morgana as it sounds witchier than Morgan, but both are “proper” girls names in the UK.

I really like it. I certainly wouldn’t think it was chavvy or American. I’d think perhaps you were interested in the Arthurian legends, which is a positive association. I prefer Morgana, but Morgan is great.

It's a Welsh boy's name or surname. I think of Morgan Freeman or Morgan Stanley or Morgan | Fashion for women (morgandetoi.com). Would you want to be called Morg or Mog?

There are so many beautiful and meaningful names for girls you could choose. Pick something else.
