Eirys or Iris?

I think Eirys looks lovely but worry about the spelling for others. Then again my other daughter is Phoebe and I've been shocked how often that's been spelled wrong by other people.

Eirys isn’t pronounced like Iris though so, presumably, people who don’t know the name will ask how to spell it.

YeahRatFans · 28/12/2023 23:24

Eirys isn't pronounced the same as Iris (and has different pronunciations depending whereabouts you are in Wales)

MaloneMeadow · 29/12/2023 02:45

They’re 2 completely different pronunciations though -

Air-is and eye-ris

Eiris · 29/12/2023 08:37

How are you saying Eirys?
I prefer Iris though.

Sugarfree23 · 29/12/2023 08:42

How is Eirys pronounced it doesn't look like it would be the same as Iris?

If you want Iris make life simple go for Iris rather than a unique spelling

pictoosh · 29/12/2023 08:46

If the name is Iris, spell it Iris.

Almondmum · 29/12/2023 08:49

It must be pronounced differently in different bits of Wales. I've only heard eirys as iris round here. And eira as eye-ra. Or Eirian as eye-rian.

Poblano · 29/12/2023 08:56

Here Eirys would be pronounced Ey-ris with Ey rhyming with Hey.

I know a Welsh Iris, pronounced Ir-is (with the Ir as a short Eer) rather than Eye-ris.

This

MerryMarigold · 29/12/2023 09:03

I would say 'Air-is' for your first spelling. If I found out you wanted it pronounced 'Iris' I would have a moment judging your 'yooniq' spelling.

sunflowerpinks · 29/12/2023 09:06

Eirys - Eye ris

Iris - Ee ris

OhNaffOffYouWazzock · 29/12/2023 09:10

To me Iris is Eyeris and Eirys is Ayris.

BoleynMemories13 · 29/12/2023 10:12

If you want Iris definitely spell it Iris. Beautiful name.

StoatofDisarray · 29/12/2023 10:32

Iris. And as others have pointed out, that's not how you pronounce Eirys.

PickledScrump · 29/12/2023 10:44

If you want iris spell it iris.

I have an Eira and pronounce it ay-ra (as in hay) so would pronounce Eirys similar

@Almondmum i think it’s a north/south wales thing. South is generally eye, north is more often ay sound.

Same for me in NE wales

MalcolmTuckersDisdainfulSneer · 29/12/2023 10:56

Iris

CaffiSaliMali · 29/12/2023 10:59

My family are from North Wales and would pronounce the ei sound as 'ey' (as in hey).

So Eirys would be EY-riss. Eira would be EY-ra.

In some parts of South Wales the ei sound is more like 'eye'.

Iris. Why complicate it.

NameChangerGameChanger2 · 29/12/2023 11:17

Air-is is a much nicer name and pronunciation so I have voted Eirys

DaNiYmaOHyd · 29/12/2023 12:28

Eirys isn't a name. Eirlys is a name.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 29/12/2023 12:39

@NameChangerGameChanger2 , very few will say it as Air-is.
They'll say EY-ris or EYE-ris

Dakers · 29/12/2023 23:52

Wow some patronising patsys out in force huh, if I asked Sofie or Sofia I take it you'd make sure to tell me they aren't pronounced the same since so many of you decided to do it here with two similar but slightly different names... I never stated I thought they were the same name 😂

Where is the name Eirys from just out of interest? It looks Welsh but I’ve never seen it before
