Eirys or Iris?

I think Eirys looks lovely but worry about the spelling for others. Then again my other daughter is Phoebe and I've been shocked how often that's been spelled wrong by other people.

@Nineteendays , It's from Iris. Iris said 'Eye-ris' would be softened by Welsh speakers to 'Ey-ris', and the name is basically Iris welshified. Eirys looks like a name (Carys, Cerys, Dilys, Glenys, Nerys etc) but isn't really.

The flower's Welsh name is iris (IRR-is).

@Dakers whether Sofie and Sofia are said the same probably depends on the language of the speaker. I'd guess that in something like Swedish one would be So-fee and the other So-fee-a.
Were you not tempted to call DD1 Ffibi?

Poblano · 30/12/2023 17:07

@DaNiYmaOHyd except that, as you say, the Welsh for Iris is Iris, pronounced IRR-is.

I'm also curious as to where the name Eirys comes from. It's not one I've come across before.

A quick search for "Eirys" plus Welsh surname returns several women named Eirys.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 30/12/2023 19:34

@Poblano , as I pp, it's probably from the softened way Welsh-speakers iris.
It's almost certainly a welshified spelling of Iris.

@Eiris , I did likewise and got only 2 despite trying several surnames. I got a few Eirlys Surname returned and the odd Eiry and even an Emrys.

OP might not be looking for a Welsh name. Maybe she wants a different spelling that would give the sound iris.

If you live in England, Iris.

if you live in Wales, Eirys.

As others have said, two completely different names, and a lot of English people will misspell it as they’ve never heard of the name before.

Riverlee · 30/12/2023 19:43

Just realised, I’m actually thinking of the name Eirlys which means snowdrop.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 30/12/2023 20:04

@Poblano , I think I didn't quite get the gist of what you said. What I meant was that the flower is pronounced IRR-is. The flower has a few different names and they're probably used regionally. cf. Ffion means foxglove but we called it 'bysedd y cŵn', others might say 'bysedd Mair' or 'cleci coch'

Iris isn't really used as a name by Welsh speakers. I can think of a couple of older Irises and it was said as 'Eirys', in the same sort of way as Laura and Lizzie would be said as 'Lora' and 'Lisi'

Eiris · 30/12/2023 21:46

I thought Eirys meaning something like Snowchild which is a sweet alternative to Eira.

Dmsandfloatydress · 30/12/2023 21:53

I've never heard of Eyris as a Welsh name and I'm Welsh. It's Eirlys. Which is Airlys or eye-lys depending on where you are in Wales. It means snowdrop. IRIS is the flower not Eyris. People will assume she is Eirlys in these parts and won't notice is a spelling mistake for Iris.

Love Eirys. Or Eira.....

DaNiYmaOHyd · 01/01/2024 17:07

Eyris is a good reason not to use it.
