Do sibling names need to match?

My two DS have traditional names but expecting third and we like more unusual names for girls. We quite like the name Saffron
Would it be strange to have something unusual with the other two children having traditional names

No I think it’s fine to have for example a Jack, George and a Saffron.

AudiobookListener · 06/12/2023 18:14

I don't think they have to match. All your children are individuals. Edit: I like Saffron.

SiennaMillar · 06/12/2023 18:15

No. I think it’s fine to have non-matching names

MaloneMeadow · 06/12/2023 18:34

Absolutely not. I find matching names eg: all similar sound, same initials, same theme etc so cringe. They’re individuals and should be treated as such. Edit to add that Saffron is lovely and still quite traditional in my eyes

UsingChangeofName · 06/12/2023 18:40

No.

Meadowflower2023 · 06/12/2023 18:44

I don't think Saffron is too out there to go with normal traditional names however I do find it strange sometimes when you hear of people calling their children George, Harry and Kanye for example. I actually think Saffron is lovely.

Crunchymum · 06/12/2023 19:05

I mean it's a bit odd to have a Henry, William and George and then name your DD Tracy. But names don't have to match per se. Names should compliment each other, IMO.

Locallady2 · 06/12/2023 19:09

Saffron works ok with traditional boys names, because it still sounds quite posh to me. I wouldn't go for anything like Lexi-mai though.

Strawberrymoonx · 06/12/2023 20:03

Thanks everyone was just worried modern and traditional wouldn't go well together. DS are called George and Thomas

You can always call them Georgie, Tommy and Saffy Xmas Wink
I jest. Non-matchy is fine.

PickledScrump · 06/12/2023 22:20

I think it’s worse to have them too matchy. The term sib-set gets used on here a lot but it makes me cringe, they aren’t a set, give them great, individual names

toastofthetown · 06/12/2023 22:41

I think George, Thomas and Saffron is fine. There’s a much wider spread of girls names than boys names, and more boys being called the popular names than girls, so it’s pretty normal to have very popular classic boys names and more unusual girls name.

I think it’s only very notable where there’s a strong theme or sound which has notably changed in style or sound. Like Horatio, Ptolemy, Cornelius and Oakley. Or Lily, Daisy, Poppy and Gertrude.

DejaVoodoo · 06/12/2023 23:09

I have 5 DC. Never, not once, did I consider their siblings names when I named a child. Still never have. No idea if my DCs names "go" or not. The adult ones have all left home and moved away, so are never standing side by side, matching each other in any case.

It's only on MN that I've seen anyone give a toss about sibling names matching, flowing or going.

buttercupcake · 06/12/2023 23:15

I’m going to go against the grain here and say that I find it odd when siblings names are completely different styles. For example Elizabeth, Harriet & Tyson.

I don’t think names need to be the same initial, matching or rhyming though.

GeorgeBeckett · 06/12/2023 23:21

Love George, Thomas and Saffron. Gorgeous!

Always felt Beatrix Potter's rabbits were an odd balance: Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-Tail and.... Peter!

But your choice is lovely!

miniaturepixieonacid · 07/12/2023 00:00

Generally, no. I think there is such a thing as so different that they sound odd said together but even that only matters while they are children, really.

Saffron is nowhere near tn the 'too different' category from your boys' names imo. It's a lovely name and will sound good with her brothers.

An example of too different - I once met siblings called William and Ocean. Both lovely but in such different ways that it jarred with me.

But then you can have too similar too - I once met siblings called Zoe and Chloe. I don't understand why you'd do that.

TheChosenTwo · 07/12/2023 00:04

No way!
so often on here I see threads called things like “what goes with Timothy and Thomas?” And “What is Jeremy’s sister called” and I just think, wtf?! Just name your kids something that you like! Nothing needs to ‘match’, it’s really twee.

Hollydays · 07/12/2023 00:26

Sibling names don't have to match but in this instance I think they do match - they all sound UK middle class to me.

theduchessofspork · 07/12/2023 00:32

I think it’s fine

Kylie or Nevaeh would be weird

junebirthdaygirl · 07/12/2023 00:34

In my experience boys like to have a more regular name and girls like something different so all your dc will be happy going forward.

SABM10 · 07/12/2023 00:42

Personally I don't see Saffron as particularly 'out there' - it's not like you have an Edward, a Henry and a Tinkerbell or something!

In my family (four siblings) my parents took turns in choosing names so two siblings have nice 'normal' names (chosen by mum) and then me and my other sibling have fairly unusual, hippyish and (IMO) not very nice sounding names (cheers dad!). I would definitely have preferred a name more in line with mum's tastes but that was about the specific names rather than feeling we didn't 'match!'. Saffron is really pretty, I know a couple of adult Saffrons and they're both amazing women

Pinkpinkpink15 · 07/12/2023 00:54

personally I'd go with something more like Charlotte, Harriet, Elizabeth, Catherine etc.

I don't think Saffron fits with your boys names very well, but it's not completely jarring like Twinkle, Apple, Sky, or the like.

Does it work for you, can you imagine standing in a playground calling for them all?

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 07/12/2023 01:47

No need to match, just as long as they're not too different? Eg Zebediah and Jane. One really different type name and the other very simple would be a bit odd.

Grumio · 07/12/2023 07:40

No. Mine matches with my sibling and we both hate it.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 07/12/2023 07:55

Imagine yourself signing Christmas cards, and choose names that "flow" rather than match 😂
