Ivy or Holly

Suchardchoccy · 27/11/2023 16:21

We are expecting our DD3 in June. We already have Rose and Sybil.
DH loves Ivy and Holly. I like both but I think Holly makes more sense for a Christmas baby? We had both been settled on Ivy if we ever had a third girl but would like to see what others think.
We both really like old fashioned names.
Opinions and suggestions are welcome please!

Cora is much nicer than Ivy. How about Iris? I do like Holly and really don't like Ivy (as a name or a plant).

Adjacentsquare · 28/11/2023 11:22

Perhaps to complement Rose and Sybil you could think of these potential options?

  1. Clara
  2. Pearl
  3. Violet
  4. Hazel
  5. Edith
  6. Florence
  7. Matilda
  8. Adelaide
  9. Beatrice
  10. Clementine

Otherwise, I prefer Ivy over Holly, in my life I have met only 1 Ivy, but many Holly's if popularity matters to you.

We're also thinking of Mary as a middle name.

I like Edith by DH doesn't. He likes Violet

If it's Downton names, how about Marigold OP?

PollyPeep · 28/11/2023 11:53

@Suchardchoccy I suspected Downton Abbey! I'm a fan too 😄 I think you'd have to choose a less well known character as Sybil is so closely tied to Downton Abbey and so is Cora (in my mind at least!). So Ivy works, or Daisy, Anna, Isobel, Marigold, maybe Violet? I think Rose, Sybil and Isobel are a great sibset as you don't have two flower names and one outsider, and they're not too themed either.

peaceinourtime · 28/11/2023 12:20

Holly, Ivy’s is a drab name really.

PollyPeep · 28/11/2023 12:28

@Suchardchoccy although I said "Rose, Sybil and Isobel" out loud and it very much sounded like Rose-Sybil-An-Isybil" so potentially Isobel is too much of a RoseSybil mishmash. I'm clearly thinking too deeply about this and living my girl name dreams through you (I have two boys lol)

Suchardchoccy · 28/11/2023 12:41

@PollyPeep 😂 I love it. DH doesn't like Isobel or Cora or Edith lol so maybe Violet. I've had Ivy in my head for such a long time but seeing the popularity puts me off, I think the popularity does bother me. There aren't many Roses and Sybil's about, which I love

I agree with a pp that Iris would be nicer than Ivy

marshmallowfinder · 28/11/2023 13:01

Ivy is a bit frumpy and geriatric. Holly is gorgeous and fine for a non- Christmas baby.

urbanbuddha · 28/11/2023 13:05

Molly?

Irridescantshimmmer · 28/11/2023 13:11

Violet looks like Violent.

I had a Hollie in April so intentionally spelt it differently, you could do that? Although of course people do still spell it with a y which she finds annoying lol.

Suchardchoccy · 28/11/2023 13:26

@marshmallowfinder true

The only problem with Holly or Hollie is we want the middle name to be Mary so it would essentially be Holy Mary 😂

My DD is Holly. She's not a christmas baby. I think maybe 2 people have asked if she was born at christmas. It's a very short conversation so I really wouldn't base your decision on that!

Same same 🤷‍♀️

ReadtheReviews · 28/11/2023 14:22

Ivy I think as sounds morenin keeping with your others. Holly sounds a bit childish next to your others.

Pemba · 28/11/2023 15:19

Phoebe or Ida would fit nicely with your other girls' names. Vintage but not frumpy.

Mary is really nice and classic, time for a revival. Good choice! Actually what about Mary for the first name?

Suchardchoccy · 28/11/2023 15:24

@Pemba Ida 🤔 Mary is lovely but our other two have famous queens as middle names (we're not monarchists we just love the British history idea) so Mary is the only option really, sort of ocd 😂
