Ivy or Holly

Suchardchoccy · 27/11/2023 16:21

We are expecting our DD3 in June. We already have Rose and Sybil.
DH loves Ivy and Holly. I like both but I think Holly makes more sense for a Christmas baby? We had both been settled on Ivy if we ever had a third girl but would like to see what others think.
We both really like old fashioned names.
Opinions and suggestions are welcome please!

Ivy isn’t as nice a plant name as Rose and Holly feels very modern compared to Sybil. What about…
Evangeline
Dora
Esme
Marguerite

justmyluck1234 · 27/11/2023 18:45

I think both names are equally nice I don't think I could choose either!

Although saying that... if I was to have a girl I was going to name her ivy (but we already have a holly )

Leafpicker2000 · 27/11/2023 18:46

Ivy (or Iris)

threecupsofteaminimum · 27/11/2023 18:47

Ivy. Holly is common now

LoreleiG · 27/11/2023 18:50

Ivy goes well with your other names, as a vintage. However, we don’t live in the 1920s! Holly is lovely. And not a Christmas name.

@SiennaMillar it is quite early to know the sex but I had a sexing blood test by the geneticist at 9 weeks as I am the carrier of a disorder that affects boys

Thank you to everyone for your opinions and suggestions!

I have a Holly who was born in the middle of July.

IWIllDoItNowInAMinute · 27/11/2023 19:00

I prefer Ivy with the children’s names you already have.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 27/11/2023 19:04

Ivy is a great choice. Holly is pretty but for some reason I think it’s a bit “young” for an adult.

Other similar old fashioned options Edith/Edie, Ida, Esme, Maeve, Clara

HowNice23 · 27/11/2023 19:11

Ivy is pretty but makes calls to mind intravenous as in drip! I love Holly, or maybe Willow or Hazel or Sorrel for naturey names.

LadyEloise1 · 27/11/2023 19:14

I love Holly. I dislike Ivy.

Hotchocolatemousse · 27/11/2023 19:17

Azalea, Zinnia, Delphine, Camelliia, Heather, Jasmin, Lilac, Iris, Dahlia, Violet and Aster are my suggestions. Holly and Ivy have been done to death.

DollyParsons · 27/11/2023 19:24

Of the two, I prefer Holly
How about Iris, Mary or Clara?

theduchessofspork · 27/11/2023 20:37

I like Ivy, always find Holly a bit twee, especially compared to the elegant Rose and Sybil

Maybe one bit of horticulture in the offspring is enough though?

Maybe..

Ivy

Coffeeandcakemum · 27/11/2023 21:59

I prefer Holly 😊 I've never been keen on the name Ivy but there are lots of them at my children's schools

FoxClocks · 27/11/2023 22:09

That's funny as we are coming into Dec I was expecting this to be a Christmas baby. Both names are nice but if she is to be born in June I would go for a more summery name.

MarthaMayWho · 27/11/2023 23:32

Rose Sybil and Daphne?
Rose, Sybil and Verity?
Rose, Sybil and Iris?
Rose, Sybil and Celia?
Rose, Sybil and Annalise?

OpenLanes · 27/11/2023 23:35

Holly will be a bit less common in this generation.
Ivy's are everywhere currently, and very similar to all the ava/evie names too

PollyPeep · 27/11/2023 23:46

I'm not sure Holly goes with Sybil and Rose. I'd be looking at names from Downton Abbey to match your other girls! So, Ivy works better for me. For other 20s names, how about Alice, Mary or Isobel? Or for other botanical names, how about Iris, Daisy or Lilac?

SaffronSpice · 28/11/2023 00:02

Other tree names? Hazel, Laurel, Willow, Rowan, Olive, Aspen, Mimosa, Cherry, Jasmine,

justanothermanicmonday1 · 28/11/2023 00:04

No one ever goes "oh your name is Holly, you should really have been born in December, how awkward"

Some of the reasons to not name your child a specific name is crazy🤣

Suchardchoccy · 28/11/2023 10:58

Both our DDs names are from Downton abbey and that's where I actually got the name Ivy from 😂 I also like Cora

KirstenBlest · 28/11/2023 11:01

@justanothermanicmonday1 , I'd imagine a Holly to get asked if her birthday was near Christmas.

MrsJPinkman · 28/11/2023 11:07

I prefer Holly out of the two.

I know a really horrible kid called Ivy and it also reminds me of poison Ivy Tilsley/Brennan from Coronation Street 🤣
