Marlow for a boy?

What are your thoughts on Marlow James for a boy? Looking for an unusual but gentle boy name beginning with M. I already have a boy called Ezra.

OP posts:

Got to admit that I immediately thought about Christopher Marlowe.
Actually, I like Marlow much more than Arlo.
My dog walker takes out three different breeds of Arlo.

ArcticBells · 23/11/2023 21:07

Marlow is the name of a place not a child but then again it's on par with Chelsea I suppose

One of most famous dead dogs there is? Is that really better?

I don't know the dead dog.
But I do know a sweet little boy called Marley and prefer it as a name to Marlow.

JaninaDuszejko · 23/11/2023 21:20

Go with Marlowe instead, much more literary. And better know than some obscure town many of us have never heard of.

I wonder if those who are so against Marlow feel the same about Skye or Iona?

JaninaDuszejko · 23/11/2023 21:29

Brooklyn, Florence, India, Lourdes, Sofia, Alexandria.

Interesting that it seems to be more common to name your daughter after a location.

Never mind the dead dog, what about one of the most famous first lines in literature?

Marley was dead: to begin with.

Marley and Me, the movie.

MrsQTip · 23/11/2023 21:39

I love it - Jamie Hector in The Wire was Marlo - different spelling but it’s a good name and sounds good with Ezra

Danielle9891 · 23/11/2023 21:40

I've got family that lives in Marlow in England so for me it's a no.

Don't know that either.
Like I said,I know a lovely boy named Marley and prefer it to Marlow. Just thought I'd give OP another suggestion (as many others are doing).

Marley and Me, the movie.

Never seen it.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 23/11/2023 21:44

Lots of people are names after towns and places.

If you lone the name then you should use it.

Blinkityblonk · 23/11/2023 21:46

I googled Marlo as it looks nicer than Marlow, and found a couple of actresses called Marlo. One used 'Marlo' as a diminutive of Margaret- that definitely works, I would much rather be called Marlo than Margaret!

This doesn't help you OP as you are looking for a boy's name. I think it's fine as a name, but there's quite a few soft M names around (Martin, Mark, Marcus, Marley, Moses, Miles).

NancyJoan · 23/11/2023 21:47

Oh, I love it.

i adore ezra

marlow…. much much less so

Exactly

Ezra gets a fantastic biblical name with loads of history and Marlow gets a made up faddy name that also happens to be a not great town. Marlow is going to be quite pissed off

Ivo

Milo
Nicholas nn Nico

Cassian (Cass)
Christopher (Christy)
Tobias / Toby
Barnabas

All soft sounding boys names…

Blinkityblonk · 23/11/2023 21:51

I was also thinking Milo as an alternative.

TotalOverhaul · 23/11/2023 22:01

I like Marlow. Makes me think of the playwright Christopher Marlowe more than the town (which is beautiful anyway.) He could be nn Arlo which is a perfectly good boy's name too.

Treesnbirds · 23/11/2023 22:09

Really like it!!

TeamSleep · 23/11/2023 22:09

Milo is a great name and goes really well with Ezra. Gets my vote and is similar to Marlow, which I’m sorry I’m not so keen on (although think it’s a lovely name for a pet)

TheIsleOfTheLost · 23/11/2023 22:46

I like the sound of it. I know more than one Harlow and a Mallory, so I would probably err towards assuming it was a girl name than a boy.

Mumsnet is a weird place to ask about names, people tend to always offer the same one and yet say it shouldn't be common either. Can't believe anyone would think Jethro is better!

@JaninaDuszejko I always watch the Muppets Christmas Carol, so it sounds wrong when there is only one Marley. Dickens clearly didn't get it as right as Gonzo.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/11/2023 22:48

I wouldn't call Marlow a "gentle" name.

atthebottomofthehill · 23/11/2023 22:52

I already know of a baby called exactly Marlow James.

So make of that what you will.

15PiecesOfFlair · 23/11/2023 22:58

Marlow was a very violent gangster on The Wire.

goingtotown · 23/11/2023 23:08

My neighbours dog is Marlow.

Almondsupreme · 23/11/2023 23:10

Milo?
