Marlow for a boy?

What are your thoughts on Marlow James for a boy? Looking for an unusual but gentle boy name beginning with M. I already have a boy called Ezra.

OP posts:

I know a boy Marlowe. Nice lad. Parents very literary.

beautifulbrothers · 23/11/2023 23:15

My DS1 is called Marlow! I obviously love it. 🥰 It's a family name, but there's also a boy in our town about 8 years older called Marlow too.

Firefly2009 · 23/11/2023 23:16

I live near there, so no from me. What made you pick that name?
I might feel differently if I'd never heard it before.

I like the name Harley - boy or girl
Or Ashley

I love the name Ezra. I’m not keen on the Arlo, Marlow, Harlow names.
Seth would go well will Ezra. I also really like the name Milo, even though it’s a popular drink especially in South Africa.

WhenSheWasBadshewasawesome · 23/11/2023 23:34

Elijah goes well with Ezra I think

LulooLemon · 23/11/2023 23:42

Marlow is a good pet name. I don't like it for a human.

ODFOx · 24/11/2023 00:00

Marley, Monty, Marty, Matty
(I'd go for the full names but these are the most popular diminutives. ) Matthew, Mark, Malcolm, Marvin... are all better than Marlowe. Even though Philip Marlowe was a genius.
Sorry

Marlow is a place name

HamBone · 24/11/2023 01:04

I know a toddler Marlowe. It surprised me at first but I’ve got used to it.

MercyIsEliminated · 24/11/2023 03:49

I like Marlow. My immediate association with this name and spelling is Antonia Forest’s series of novels about the Marlow family. Brilliant books. Also Charles Marlow, a character in some of Joseph Conrad’s works.

Jewelspun · 24/11/2023 03:58

I know you want to spell it without the e but I just think Philip Marlowe.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 24/11/2023 04:17

Isn’t it amazing how proud some people are of never having heard of something?

I’m not a great fan of Marlow, OP. How about Michael? Continues the biblical theme of Ezra.

FacingTheWall · 24/11/2023 04:29

My ds went to school with a Marlow and every time I heard it I always thought “like the town”. The kids didn’t though, perfectly normal name to them.

Soulstirring · 24/11/2023 04:33

Marlowe with an ‘e’ changes everything.

i do quite like it.

Alternatively, Miles? Not Milo for me.

how so?

does the poor child have to go through life saying “my name is Marlowe. WITH AN E”

SandandSky · 24/11/2023 08:58

I really like it. If I were to use it would spell it Marlowe (like Christopher Marlowe) - but either way I think it’s very nice

LaurieStrode · 24/11/2023 09:11

Marlo is a woman's name.

JussathoB · 24/11/2023 09:16

Ezra and …
Miles
Marcus
Mason
Maxwell
Michael
Marlon

FayCarew · 24/11/2023 11:16

Milo?

Spelling is quite an important life skill for children to learn. As is patience.

Maybe he’d get the apocryphal coffee cup treatment - Emarlow?

makes no sense at all in the context of my post

TequilaNights · 24/11/2023 12:19

I really like it, I've never heard of the town named Marlow and so what, lots of names are the same as place names.

FayCarew · 24/11/2023 12:56

@TequilaNights , like Chester, Lincoln, Windsor, Royston and Bristol.

Not sure I'd want to be called Biggleswade, Cleckheaton or Oswaldtwistle.

** I've not been to Biggleswade, Cleckheaton or Oswaldtwistle, so it's not a comment on the places. The names are great, but might be a bit too unusual as human names.

@Samzzz Marlow was a middle name for DS's great-grandad. And there are records in our family going back to the 1700s, so it's not a recent name. It's also gender-neutral, which I happen to love. A lot of people mishear Marlow as Arlo and also Milo, but it's never been an issue. Most are interested and comment on it being unusual, which I always take as a compliment. 😜
