Demise of the ‘chav’ name?

I’ve lived on the same council estate for years. When I was younger every girl was Keeley, Courtney, Charmaine, Chantelle, etc.
Boys were Tyler, Liam, Scott, Riley, Bailey, etc.
Knew 3+ of each in school, and these names generally made our class very obvious.

Now I’ve noticed that the children on my estate have completely different names.

Girls:
Iris, Francesca, Esme, Belle and Elizabeth

Boys:
Roy, Jasper, Anthony, Isaac, Jacob

I think these are really timeless, classic names!

I know MN is very middle class, but anyone else noticed this change?

The council house I grew up in (and tbh was a bit embarrassed by) is now worth half a million (I was astounded). When I was a kid it seemed tiny in comparison to my (private house) school friends but I can look back and see it was a pretty substantial, very solidly built house, especially compared to the new builds of today. This was the 60s/70s and everyone in my class, whether WC or MC, all had the same type of names (Linda, Jane, Julie, Sandra, Peter, Paul, Alan etc). You wouldn’t have been able to make any judgements on name alone back then. I can’t think of a single name that would have been considered ‘chavy’.

I first heard “chavi” in the 80s, meaning child from friends with Romany forebears. “Council House and Violent” is apparently a backronym

Chav names are now jackson, Harper, Cora, Bailey, Isla etc! Also the double barrelled surname is a very chav thing!

I only ever knew one girl with a double-barrelled surname and she was probably the only MC child in our class for the year she was at the school. I’m surprised to hear it’s considered chavvy now.

@AppropriateAdult , in Ireland it's a regular name but in GB it's a name that became very popular in the 1990s, probably something to do with the band Oasis.

Similarly, look at the popularity of Lewis and Sebastian, regular names but became popular at the same time as a celebrity hit the big time. Amelie and Sienna's popularity can be linked to a film and film star respectively.

@stilllill , the double-barrelling now tends to suggest 'parents not married'.
Where I come from, I can only think of two families that were double-barrelled, and that was because of inheritance reasons in previous generations.

Why do people think you have to live on a council estate to be a chav? Take Katie Price as an example, she doesn't live on one and never has but she is the epitome of chav!

Judging will always take place, no matter what the social class.

Judging doesn't imply sneering. Most people are more comfortable with others of their own social standing as there are common points of reference.

Names are traditionally part of the judgement process. We either consciously or unconsciously associate certain names with a corresponding social class.

So, upper class girls may be:

Helena
Miranda
Louise/Louisa (but not Eloise)
Georgina/ Georgiana

Upper class boys may be:

Rupert
Henry
James
Frederick

Just an opinion of course.

To add: I was certainly not born into any kind of privilege. (Mixed race, poor, lived in an inner city).

MN is also full of posters who complain and are bitter when anyone has a problem that isn’t affected by the COL crisis.

My middle name is one of the “chav” names, albeit with a different spelling due to one of my parents being from a different country and that’s how it’s spelt there. Heaven forbid.
I would guess I don’t tick any of @stilllill “chav” boxes so where does that leave me?? Or is it ok as I have a forrin parent??

The 'chav' label doesn't apply to class, it applies to behaviour, taste, manners, and so on.

Oh how naive you are if you think this thread and the use of the word 'chav' is not class related.

I’m what MN would consider UMC and I am quite fond of the name Riley, which shows how much of a nonsense this discussion really is.

Chav in my area was used for those that were common, no matter if their parents had a mortgage or not, it was those that wore Burberry or went out in tracksuits or leggings. I would imagine these days it would be aimed at the long gilet wearing mums with children called Harrison Jax or Molly Mae.
