Jairus?

We really like this name for a boy, pronounced jy-Rus. We like that it’s quite uncommon biblical name. What do you think?

Reminds me of walrus even though it’s only the second syllable in common. It is a nice name when I think about it but my first reaction is walrus unfortunately. If you like it, you should use it.

I actually know one! He's in his 70s, very alternative, his parents were both musicians (one used to make bodhrans). I love the name but mostly because I associate it with someone I know who is very lovely.

I read it as Jay-rus. It's likely all of his friends will call him Jay/Jy.

I quite like Jy as a nickname.

He sounds brilliant!. That’s definitely pushed me more towards going with the name.

How have you got gee from Jai? I can under Jay or even Jair as PP said, but not Gee.

I’m not too bothered about having to correct people on how it’s pronounced. DH has a name that people sometimes pronounce/spell wrong and usually when he’s corrected them once it doesn’t happen again. So that’s not an issue for us.

It's not a name I'm familiar with. I initially read it as Darius with a J until I realised the r and I were the other way around so there could be some visual confusion there.

Ultimately though it's your choice. If you both love it, go for it.

I understand that, but as I’ve said, DH has a name that can be mispronounced or misspelled and it usually only takes one correction and everything is fine. I have a really common name that has multiple spellings and it was never an issue with me. I can’t predict how my child will feel about their name but given my own experiences I don't think this name will be too much of a hassle.

That’s what I like too. It’s not used very often but also isn’t made up. I do like it for a girl as well actually, it’s quite pretty.

I’m seeing Jaysus, which is common Irish slang for the J-Man.

I don’t think you’d have too much of an issue with pronunciation in most places in Scotland where the letter ‘J’ is pronounced as j-eye, though it will still be extremely uncommon.

I like it! I have never met one but I'd assume the jy-rus pronunciation, and I do know the story of Jairus' daughter from the Bible.

I absolutely love it. It was on my list for baby number 3 but I was put off by the different pronunciations and ultimately decided against it. My children all have biblical names, we went with Jonah in the end!

I'd pronounce it Jy-Russ too.
