We really like this name for a boy, pronounced jy-Rus. We like that it’s quite uncommon biblical name. What do you think?

Wasn't that David Bowie's name in Labyrinth?

That was Jareth - I named my son after him!

I like Jairus, I know a Jai who is very sweet.

I would say JayRuss, if I saw it written down. Nicknames could be Jay or Russ I guess. It's ok but I don't love it.

Oxonc3 · 11/11/2023 12:38

I don’t know what Jy sounds like? Is it different to JayRus? That is how I would pronounce it. But even the simplist names are often mispronounced or the emphasis put on wrong syllable and if you are not bothered then go for it.

Here I'd say jy to rhyme with sky, as opposed to jay to rhyme with hay.

(But I know trying to explain pronunciation online is tricky due to differences in accent!)

I don’t think you’d have too much of an issue with pronunciation in most places in Scotland where the letter ‘J’ is pronounced as j-eye, though it will still be extremely uncommon.

I'm Scottish and although, when reading the alphabet, I'd pronounce J and J-eye, I wouldn't pronounce it like that as part of of word.

volunteersruz · 11/11/2023 13:02

For some reason it keeps reminding me of jiz which is really not a good association!

I’m seeing Jaysus, which is common Irish slang for the J-Man.

Same here. Jaysus was the first thing that popped into my mind

Love it!

SeatonCarew · 12/11/2023 16:04

Makes me think of giro, not great I'm afraid.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 13/11/2023 21:37

I read it as Jayrus. A lot of people won't be able to pronounce it.

KeeefBurtain · 13/11/2023 21:42

I actually quite like it, and I’m not usually a fan of anything unusual.

for those struggling, it rhymes with (miley) Cyrus

celestebellman · 13/11/2023 21:45

Sounds like gyrus, which is a ridge on the surface of the brain.
Cyrus is much nicer.

TLDRfuckers · 13/11/2023 21:46

Christ on a bike

I read it as Jayrus. A lot of people won't be able to pronounce it.

Why wouldn't people be able to pronounce jy to rhyme with dye and rus to rhyme with pus? They might pronounce it wrong once but iny experience people who care, learn.

Op of you love it, do it. I wouldn't have it on my list, but I'm sure many people wouldn't have my kids names on it.

And I like Jy for a shortening

Meredusoleil · 13/11/2023 22:01

I know the pronunciation as used to teach a boy with the name a few years ago!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 13/11/2023 22:08

People with a Christian background will be familiar with it, and the pronunciation Jy rhymes with sky). I quite like it. Can't think of anything negative.

JaxiiTaxii · 13/11/2023 22:11

To much like virus for me.
