Penny or Pearl?

In agony over choosing a name for my second DD! We've gone though thousands of possibilities and have whittled it down to two options, both with the middle name Rae.

Penny Rae
Pearl Rae

Which would you choose?!

Penny and Pearl are both on my list! I also love Polly. Perhaps I just really like 5-letter P names.

I think Penny Rae flows better than Pearl Rae, so I would choose Penny as you are set on the middle name.

Mayhemmumma · 07/11/2023 20:51

Pearl

Shutyourcakehole · 07/11/2023 20:58

I'm not fond of either, but if I had to choose, I'd say Penny with Rae sounds much nicer.

I think Polly would be nice though.

Pearl sounds too dated imo. And not in the way that some old fashioned names have made a come back. I'd lump it in with the likes of Freda or Hilda, Jean or Silvia. One of those old names that'd never come back as a trendy old fashioned name...just old fashioned!

MaloneMeadow · 07/11/2023 21:20

I really don’t like any of them, very twee and common.
Rae is Hebrew for female sheep! Not sure why you’d want to name your daughter after that

ChillysWaterBottle · 07/11/2023 23:11

Pearl is lovely but I'm biased as its my younger sister's name :)

peaceinourtime · 08/11/2023 12:01

Penny of the two, it is fine on its own it doesn’t have to be short for anything.

Ringshanks · 12/01/2024 08:25

I like Penny , fine on its own (that’s what we gave ) but I considered Aspen and Penrose x

theduchessofspork · 12/01/2024 10:07

Penelope Rae nn Penny - Penny is a bit itsy bitsy as a full name

But if you can think of a different middle name then Pearl - Pearl Rae sounds like a fish or a deadly weapon

Philippa nn Pippa maybe ?

Petra

Pearl is a brilliant name for a girl.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 13/01/2024 13:41

Penny is lovely. I personally dislike Pearl.

Rae isn´t my cup of tea but it it´s nice with Penny.
Pearl Rae doesn´t sound good (at all).

FourChimneys · 13/01/2024 14:14

Pearl sounds dreadful with my regional accent.

Penny is lovely imo. Maybe full name Penelope although I grew up with one who was shortened to Nelly. I like Polly too.

Kpo58 · 13/01/2024 18:13

Heidi is a nice name.

Penny Rae sounds like the name of a road.

ChanelNo19EDT · 13/01/2024 18:16

Am I the only one singing 'Pearl's a singer' ? Smile

If the alternative is Penelope, then I think that is slightly better.

marshmallowfinder · 13/01/2024 19:07

I don't like either I'm afraid and Rae is just dreadful, plus it sounds like an old man in a string vest's name.😄 Sorry OP, but it really is a filler name. Ruby is nice enough though.

Meditationspider · 13/01/2024 19:20

What’s your regional accent like… round us Pearl would be more like Pe-rrul

ShazzaF · 13/01/2024 19:22

My lovely Gran is called Pearl. I can still hear my great-grandma calling her name in her broad West Country accent. Love it!

SabbatWheel · 13/01/2024 19:23

Finty Rae mentioned above is fab, and kind of complements your other DC names.

DappledThings · 13/01/2024 19:24

rhymeswithjello · 13/01/2024 18:22

what about:

nova rae
lucy rae
cora rae
ruby rae

???

Nova Rae sounds like a sci-fi weapon

BasiliskStare · 13/01/2024 19:32

@rhymeswithjello I love Pearl but she was my favourite teacher at school so I have a fondness for it. Of your other choices I would go with Lucy or Cora. My youngest dog has two sisters both called Ruby ( not with us - from the same litter ) so that probably informs my choice . One Is Ruby Tuesday. As I recall , when DS was at school he had two Ruby s , I do like the the name but given the dog association that is what comes across to me . It would not to any normal person 😁

Girlmumx2 · 13/01/2024 19:39

Lola Rae
Nina Rae
Frances Rae

DrewHormordr · 13/01/2024 21:17

Very Sorry but neither.

BasiliskStare · 13/01/2024 21:17

@Girlmumx2 & @rhymeswithjello

I love Frances - it is a long time ago but had I had a daughter Frances would have been up there along with Stella Both lovely names
