Upper class sibsets

I see all the time on here people saying that the true upper class name their kids traditional names like William, James etc, but then see actual aristocracy with names like Peregrine (I.e. Viscount Peregrine Pearson) and wonder if we’re all wrong!

In DD’s (private) school there was a family with a Hector and Carrington! In reality though the vast majority had very normal names, they were one of a few exceptions

No, they can be a mix of both. ‘Freddie and Lily’ can be as upper class as ‘Allegra and Phineas’.

I used to love reading the telegraph birth announcements to see what people named their kids- obviously you get the celebs mixed in with the aristocracy but ur was good fun!

It's not a case of all being wrong. Upper class people don't all choose the same kinds of names as each other, neither do all middle class people or all working class people. Plus some names are popular across the board.

I have worked in expensive fee-paying schools my whole career, and with a few exceptions, it's been names like Alex, Tom, Callum. Lots of Finns, Finbars and Finlays in recent years. Also Joshua, Will, Ben, Max etc.

The only unusual names I've ever had were from European families. I once taught a Seraphin (lovely boy). I've also taught quite a few Russian kids, often Boris and Nikolai.

I once overheard a family use the name Marmaduke on holiday. No indication that they were "classy" though.

Dp went to a pretty good public boarding school (one you would all know) and there were lots a James's, David's, Paul's, Peter, Matthew, William... basically biblical or Kings.

Of course, but most of the announcements are probably from people who aren't aristocratic or upper class.
