Longer name for Ellie?

Misspotterscat · 01/11/2023 16:40

Husband loves Ellie for DD due in January. I have worked with children for a long time and have met many many Ellie’s so it doesn’t feel fresh and exciting to me and isn’t making my heart sing. I also like a longer name that has options which Ellie doesn’t. So I’m wondering if we can come up with a compromise and find a long name I love, which can sometimes be shortened to the name he loves.

I like Eloise and Eliana but I don’t think they’re quite right.

Does anyone have any suggestions of names that are feminine but strong and can be shortened to Ellie?

TIA

Elouise is used but it looks like whoever named her can't spell.
Ellie is so overused.

Eleanor or Elinor, can be shortened to Ellie, Ella, Lena or Nora. Very versatile !

Villanelle?

Honestly anything that begins in “El” or has elle/ella in it can be shortened to Ellie. It’s a very common shortened form even here on MN (hence my name- there are a lot of us! 😂)

I know an Elara whose parents call her Ellie. Also Elise or Ellen, to name a few I didn’t see yet while skimming.

I think Elle is so much nicer than Ellie. It’s not longer, it’s shorter but it’s stronger and more sophisticated. Just a thought.

I know an Ellie who is actually Elissa

EtiennePalmiere · 01/11/2023 18:47

I knew an Ellie whose full name was Elizabeth

I’d be careful of the name Ellie as It can be matched with elephant by school bullies 😔

I personally can’t stand the name Ellie, never met a kind or nice ellie. Change the name to one you like

Wow, you sound nice 🙄

Hey! I'm a nice, kind Ellie!

OP, my name is Ellen on my birth certificate but I've never been called that apart from by teachers in infant school. I've always been Ellie to family and friends.

Congrachularshuns! 🥂

My mother's given name is Eleni, but she's been known as Elly since she was a wee little thing. It seems that the moniker may have traveled beyond our shores, with reports of several Polish baby girls now bearing the name Ellie. It has truly bloomed into a name of its own.

For a longer handle, may I suggest Eleanor, Elizabeth, Eloise, Eliza, Elaine, Elvira, Elowen, Elena, Eliana, Elora, Elspeth, or Elissa?

Interestingly enough, Elle is currently not a very fashionable choice and does not even place in the top 100. However, Ella reigns at number 23 and Ellie at number 78. Same thing seems to have happened with the name Eve as compared with Evie, Eva.

I've taught 3 girls called Ellie. One was just Ellie, one was Eleanor and one was Elodie.

The Eloise I taught never shortened to Ellie, neither did Elora. I think both of those are beautiful though and could definitely work as a more formal name to shorten to Ellie.

I love Eliza too but, despite the El at the start, I don't feel this shortens as naturally to Ellie. Just like I would find it odd to shorten Elizabeth to Ellie.

Elodie, Eloise or Elora would be my choice. I'm not a fan as Eleanor personally.

@Whatthefuck3456 And I suppose everyone with your name is a beacon of joy and kindness? #PotKettleBlack
