Madison

TheBirdintheCave · 30/10/2023 15:02

The spelling of the surname is Madison and it means 'son of Matthew'.

dementedpixie · 30/10/2023 15:03

Madison
Doesn't look right with 2 d's

PurpleChrayne · 30/10/2023 15:03

I wouldn't spell it any way because it's dreadful.

quietnightmare · 30/10/2023 15:03

Madison but I've seen both in my time

InTheRainOnATrain · 30/10/2023 15:03

Madison

PinkLemons99 · 30/10/2023 15:05

Lovely name.
Maddison Brown is an Australian actress so maybe go with the two DD's?

DappledThings · 30/10/2023 15:07

There isn't any spelling of a name that means son of that can make it a girl's name

RoseRows · 30/10/2023 15:09

I prefer Maddison

SweetBirdsong · 30/10/2023 15:10

One D! Smile

Lovely name. 😍

kezzykicks · 30/10/2023 15:10

I work with children and know two - both spell it Madison

SweetBirdsong · 30/10/2023 15:12

Karren Brady spells her name with 2 'R's and it makes me itch every time I see it. I'm like 'nooooo, it's ONE 'R!' Grin

Each to their own, but some names should only be spelt (spelled?) a certain way, and Madison is one of them. Just one D. Madison! Smile

MerryChristmasToYou · 30/10/2023 15:14

Madison. It's a surname. I don't like it as a girl's name but I suppose it's better than Trump or Bush.

😆 Imagine calling your kid any of those?!!

I have to say I do know more people with Madison as the first name though, than the surname! I know 3 girls/women called Madison. I don't know anyone with it as their surname. I am sure it is used as a surname, and I'm not doubting you. I have just never come across it myself. Smile

TheShellBeach · 30/10/2023 15:41

There was a POTUS called James Madison.

NannyElle · 30/10/2023 15:43

To confuse matters there is also a footballer called James Maddison with two D's.

Madison I think is the more usual spelling in England

MerryChristmasToYou · 30/10/2023 15:43

@SweetBirdsong , James Madison - Wikipedia

maddison - Search (bing.com)

"Madison is also used as a given name. It has become popular for girls in recent decades. Its rise is generally attributed to the 1984 release of the film Splash.[1] From an almost non-existent given name before 1985,..."

The character in Splash, a mermaid, took the name after seeing a sign for Madison Avenue.

mathanxiety · 30/10/2023 15:49

One D.

I'd consider it a dated name.

LulooLemon · 30/10/2023 15:50

Agreed, one D, dated, strange meaning for a girl.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/10/2023 15:52

No, the spelling doesn't make it a girl's name. Giving the name to a girl makes it a girl's name. It having originally been a boy's name, or you not liking it as a girl's name, does not mean it is not a girl's name now.

Lucyintheskywithlove · 30/10/2023 15:57

I prefer Madison, but the ones I know (3 in total) spell it Maddison.

muddyford · 30/10/2023 16:05

One D. Otherwise it looks like Mad Dison.

Shitweek1 · 30/10/2023 16:34

Definitely Madison. Two DDs is over fussy

Breadahead · 30/10/2023 16:38

Madison, like the avenue, ie like the president.

It's a surname though and I'm not sure why you'd choose it for a girl. It's a bit trailer trash sounding

BitofaStramash · 30/10/2023 16:40

Either is fine but I'd go with whichever is the most popular otherwise she will spend her life getting it spelled incorrectly
