Me and my partner just can’t agree on which spelling of this name!

One D. It's a name that has a negative view but I'm sure you're aware of that.

Eiris · 30/10/2023 16:59

I like this name for a girl and the nn Maddie.

Madison.

I really dislike the name though. Madeleine is lovely.

"Madison is also used as a given name. It has become popular for girls in recent decades. Its rise is generally attributed to the 1984 release of the film Splash.[1] From an almost non-existent given name before 1985,..."

The character in Splash, a mermaid, took the name after seeing a sign for Madison Avenue.

Ooooh interesting. 😀 Thank you @MerryChristmasToYou . Smile

Has it? Why? Confused

BoleynMemories13 · 30/10/2023 18:05

Whether we like the name or not is irrelevant, that's not what OP is asking!

To answer the question, I would spell it Madison as that's by far the more 'usual' spelling. Make life a bit easier for her as I think most people will automatically assume that's how her name is spelt.

There isn't any spelling of a name that means son of that can make it a girl's name

No, the spelling doesn't make it a girl's name. Giving the name to a girl makes it a girl's name. It having originally been a boy's name, or you not liking it as a girl's name, does not mean it is not a girl's name now.

OK, I'll quantify. It makes a name foolishly used for girls.

Madison.

scottishGirl · 30/10/2023 20:57

I would go with one D. I know that Maddie Ziegler (young girl who danced with Sia, was on Dance Moms) is Madison one D.

FourStringsNoWaiting · 30/10/2023 21:09

@SweetBirdsong possibly because of Ashley Madison, the dating website specifically for married people to have affairs. That's the only negative association I can think of

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/10/2023 21:16

OK, I'll quantify. It makes a name foolishly used for girls.

People probably once said the same of Hilary and Lindsay, which started out as boys' names.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 30/10/2023 21:20

The normal spelling is Madison, for girls anyway. The female use comes from a film about a mermaid who decides to use the name after seeing Madison Avenue in NYC.

cariadlet · 30/10/2023 21:31

The danger of using Madison is that it's quite dated.

It was unheard of before Splash. In the film, the Daryl Hannah character was laughed at for choosing a random word for a name.

It was like Paddington being named after the train station.

It had become a popular name when I started teaching in the early 90s. I haven't come across a Madison for years.

PurpleChrayne · 30/10/2023 15:03

I wouldn't spell it any way because it's dreadful.

Er, yeah.

Madeline is nice?

I would never have made that link to be honest. I don't think the name is dated either. (as @cariadlet said.) 2 Madisons I know were born between 2004 and 2010. The other one I know was born in 1999.

I also agree with other posters. The OP isn't asking what people think of the name anyway. So why are people throwing shade on it? Sad

They aren’t madly popular, TBF

It’s a name forum. You will get opinions on names as well as whatever you are asking. Tis the deal.

But the OP asked about the spelling. She didn't ask for people to say it's a shit name. 😟

It’s funny now to see the scene where she decides on the name Madison to be told that it isn’t a female first name.

Snugglemonkey · 30/10/2023 22:42

It is not very nice either way, but two d's is most awful.

Workawayxx · 30/10/2023 22:44

Madison is nicer spelling
imo

Monsteramagic · 31/10/2023 07:36

Well. Thanks to everyone who has actually answered the spelling question! 🤣

I’m not particularly interested in opinions on the actual name, which is why I didn’t ask for them! I knew I’d get some anyway though.. anonymous people posting on the internet can always be unnecessarily aggressive and rude with their opinions. I’m sure some mumsnetters would be horrified that this won’t be the first child I’ve given a gender neutral “surname” name to. Our actual surname is also one that people use as a gender neutral given name too. The horror 🙄

For anyone who’s actually interested, the different spellings actually have different origins and therefore different meanings, I’ll post screenshots, but I’m not really worried about that either. I just don’t want her to have to correct people forever and it seems that one d seems to be more used here in the UK. It’s also in the top 200 in many western countries still. So it can’t be that dated and underused. I’d prefer that than being one of 4 like I was in the same class with the same name anyway.
