Thoughts on Astrid?

Early days for us still but DH and I have been throwing names around, he's Swedish so we're looking at Swedish/Scandi names but avoiding those that would be out of place in the UK.

Thoughts on Astrid for a girl? Our surname is recognisably Swedish. We'd probably add a middle name but haven't got that far yet.

I swing between really liking it and not being so sure. We also like Ronja, but I know a Sonja who too often has to explain the j is actually an i sound, so maybe not!

Otherwise open to other Scandi / Swedish suggestions! Thanks.

@Changeling78 Does your DD's name get shortened or nicknamed at all? I only wonder as I can't see an obvious nn for Astrid. Not that a nn is a necessity.

I know of one Astrid (who is Swiss!) and she's absolutely lovely.

Also our nickname for Astrid is Star - not particularly short or linked but that's what we've always used 😂

If you have a swedish surname I would probably go for something more unusual. I like Ronja. Is ‘j’ always an ‘I’ sound as I thought it was silent in freyja?
Astrid is pretty but Also a bit of a trendy name in the uk and I bet there are loads of other scandi names which are fab and will be unique??

I know a little girl called Astrid and she/her family pronounce it like 'Ash-trid' whereas I thought it should be 'As-trid'. I don't know whether this sort of ambiguity might bother you.

Mallin is nice and easily pronounceable

DD is an Astrid - I'm half Swedish and always wanted a Scandi name for my child! We also considered Malin but Astrid was always the favourite.

@Lilascupcakes It would definitely be As-trid. I've never heard anyone pronounce it as Ash so hopefully not something that would be a frequent issue.

@BungleandGeorge I like Mallin but it's very very similar to a close family member of DH's (but not one we'd want to honour in a name!)

My parents friend mispronounced Astrid as Asteroid and now that's her nickname (although just between me and my mum because DD is quite rightly insistent that her name is Astrid and no nicknames or terms of endearment allowed - gotta love a 4 year old!)

I love it. Someone I know has a dd called Astrid (about 12) and I know an older person (she goes by Astri pronounced Astree - not really much shorter but nice all the same!) but I don’t know any others at all.

Another lover here. I only have one DC and will probably stay that way, but I have said before if I had another and it was a girl that Astrid would likely be my name of choice.
