Thoughts on Astrid?

Early days for us still but DH and I have been throwing names around, he's Swedish so we're looking at Swedish/Scandi names but avoiding those that would be out of place in the UK.

Thoughts on Astrid for a girl? Our surname is recognisably Swedish. We'd probably add a middle name but haven't got that far yet.

I swing between really liking it and not being so sure. We also like Ronja, but I know a Sonja who too often has to explain the j is actually an i sound, so maybe not!

Otherwise open to other Scandi / Swedish suggestions! Thanks.

Also love it. Reminds me of Pippi Longstocking

Comedycook · 25/10/2023 19:44

Dislike Astrid intensely. It's what tarot card readers who live in Brighton are called.

BettyBallerina · 25/10/2023 19:44

It was on my shortlist for a dd. Lovely.

Don't hold back @Comedycook, tell us what you really think Grin

I'm half-Swedish and also considered Astrid for the same reason! Also Lotta. Many of my relatives (still in Sweden) happen to have names that also work easily in the UK, as do I. Louise, Susan, Eva (these three pronounced differently), Maria, Sofia.

KirstenBlest · 25/10/2023 20:20

Lovely

GingeNinga · 25/10/2023 20:43

Love it, Astrid is a beautiful name.

lordloveadog · 25/10/2023 20:56

Great name

It's my name and I absolutely hate it! Surprised to see so much love for it.

I'm chuckling at Comedycook's view though!

I like it a lot. It was very popular 10 years ago where I live, and has definitely had its moment, but that will differ from one area to another.

theduchessofspork · 25/10/2023 21:27

I really like it, and Astri as a nn

Malin is also nice and more unusual

Not a fan though of Ronja, I can see Ron, or even worse Ronald, as a nick name..

That's interesting. I genuinely don't think I've ever met or heard of an Astrid of any age in the UK (except Lindgren and other Swedish personalities of course).

There are lots in East London (lots of them have brothers called Magnus too). There were 3 in my son's nursery, and it wasn't a big nursery!

Watchthedoormat · 25/10/2023 21:37

Love Astrid

KirstenBlest · 25/10/2023 21:38

It's increased in popularity recently, so she may be one of two or three in her year because of it being popular within your area. It's not particularly popular nationally.

gluenotsoup · 25/10/2023 21:41

I had a Finnish friend called Asta. I love that too as a possible alternative?

ACGTHelix · 25/10/2023 21:46

quite a nice name, reminds me of the character in the tomorrow people series

BulbasaurBloom · 25/10/2023 21:51

I know quite a lot of them between 10 years to 3 months in London. I think of it as quite a trendy name- in the name vein as Nora or Beatrice.

Novalie, Eivor, Sigrid, Ulla?

schoolsoutforever · 25/10/2023 21:54

It’s my 16 year old daughter’s name. She loves it. It’s unusual without being too crazy, I would say.

occa · 25/10/2023 21:56

Astrid is absolutely lovely. Great name.

Amonthinthecountry · 25/10/2023 22:00

I really like it. Also, how about Ingrid?

That is a very specific objection!

Eh, is there anything you want to tell us about your negative experience of a tarot card reader from Brighton called Ingrid?

idkbroidk · 25/10/2023 22:21

Mischance · 25/10/2023 22:23

I knew a girl who was called Astrid - her middle names were Railway Station because that was where she was either conceived or born - I cannot remember which!!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/10/2023 22:24
