Harry Potter names

I love all the names in Harry Potter, like Draco, Sirius, Abraxus, regulus, Arcturus.
I obviously can’t use some of them because they’re just too associated with Harry Potter, and I think the others are just a bit much, for someone who isn’t Greek.

Would love suggestions for boys names that could work instead, or even just ideas of types of names I may like to look for. I’ve tried googling constellation names for example. thank you!

There is a girl in DD’s year group called Hermionie - always thought it was ridiculous and a very cruel choice!!

Hermione was used by Shakespeare! It's no crueller than calling a child Juliet or Cordelia. (I'd probably draw the line at Goneril though - too much like gonorrhea!)

What’s wrong with Hermione?! (Or do you mean because they spell it wrong?)

I’m still amazed at the PP who thinks there’s something wrong with the perfectly average and lovely name of Albie. I know loads of Albies from 18-9yrs. It’s like saying ‘Jack’ is all wrong.

This place is batshit - there is a poster on here who froths like a freshly poured Butterbeer if anyone without Spanish heritage dares consider the name Francesca.

I mean, literally, ridiculous.

Is there? Oh my god. Hilarious 😆

My favourite name is my great great grandfather's, Aquila. It means eagle. His brother was Jeptha, another name due a comeback.

I’d love to hear more of your family names!

Seamus

Oh how strange. Bearing in mind Francesca is Italian, I wonder where Spain comes in? The Spanish name is Francisca.

It's Sextus, not Sixtus. And it wouldn't fly nowadays.

I love Septimus, but you'd probably have to pop out a few more before you can use that name.

Sixtus is the name of one of Jacob Rees-Mogg’s kids.

Good reason to avoid it IMO, but it does seem to be a name.

Ah sorry yeah I meant Italian Grin

SilentBobby · 24/10/2023 12:31

Roman and Greek mythology and history I would suggest are a good source for you.
Russian names also have a bit of that flavour, Alexei for example perhaps?
Nature names like Rowan, Jasper might also fit the bill.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/10/2023 12:34

@Longma I actually wanted to call DD (12) "Isis", but fortunately, DH's grip on current affairs got the better of the pregnancy hormones.

Yes, the name has gone the way of Alexa, Karen, Siri: Used to be a name, but is now cruel to name a newborn that.

DesertSnow · 24/10/2023 17:03

No suggestions for boy names but just wanted to say I wouldn't let the association with HP/other people's opinions of that put you off. My 11 week-old daughter is called Luna - for many reasons but HP is not one of them, but the number of people who've asked 'is it because of Luna Lovegood'! If you love a name, go for it.

SummaLuvin · 24/10/2023 18:55

I have the same predicament with Andromeda, Andy for short, as a girls name. I just love it, but I also think it's probably a bit much!

Boys names that I like that have a touch of pizazz but not too much to actually use are:
Alistair
Amos
August
Constantine
Lucien
Sacha
Wilbur

MaloneMeadow · 23/10/2023 17:56

@Somewhatchallenging I think you’ll find that there is.

No, there isn’t. There’s a Hermione. Not a Hermionie.

Hullobaby · 24/10/2023 21:01

Have a look at the TV series Spartacus as there is so many awesome Roman names within the characters. All very HPish

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 24/10/2023 21:09

Hermione is lovely. Hermionie is very unfortunate.

Sounds like you like classical names, OP. Hector?
