Irish or Scottish Boy Names

We found out yesterday that DC3 is a boy! 🥰🥰 We have two DDs and knew what their names were straight away.

DH’s family are Irish and my dad’s family are Scottish so a name with either of those heritages would be lovely. I’m not too fussed for matching names but DDs are Kara and Aoife so don’t want a name that seems bizarre next to those. We have a two-syllable Irish surname starting with a hard C sound.

Names I like:
Rory
Theodore
Cameron - not sure on the CC initials
Luca
Quinn

DH likes:
Theodore
Darragh - I worry this sounds too similar to Kara
Harrison - really not keen on this

We both like Theodore but I know it’s incredibly popular at the moment. Also just not sure it ‘fits’ with our DDs’ names.

What other names might I like?

I love Xander but DH has a cousin with this name so don’t feel I could use it.

Conor would be my choice if I had a boy - nice Irish/Scottish roots!

Fleur405 · 22/10/2023 08:00

What about Hamish? I believe - although I don’t know how I know this so can’t promise it’s true - that is the Scottish version of Seamus. I know a 6 year old Hamish and I like it!

Alexander, Struan and Angus seem to be on the rise in Scotland just now but not too popular. Rory is very popular where I am (but also very nice).

anothercupparosytea · 22/10/2023 08:23

I love Struan but does not go with our surname but would with a hard C

Others I like:
Ellis
Magnus
Malachy
Fraser
Harris instead of Harrison?
Lachlan
Lewis

Just looked it up. It’s Welsh. Doesn’t rule it out for me but would be keen for Scottish or Irish.

We have similar tastes! The last 3 names here are my top 3 choices for my baby due next month! I already have an Oisín 😅

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/10/2023 09:50

Rory - great but many can't say R. Wowy/Vovy not good
Theodore - I really dislike the name Theodore. Can't not see 'the odo(u)r'.
Cameron - will be Cam. Cam C.... doesn't sound good
Luca - too trendy. Luke is better
Quinn - can't not see Quim

DH likes:
Theodore - dislike. too popular
Darragh - sounds a bit too similar to Kara. not keen
Harrison - you're really not keen on this, so it's a no

Ecnerual · 22/10/2023 11:07

Oisín
Seamus/Shay
Darragh

Are all names we considered for our DS's. It might be because I have an English accent but my pronunciation of Kara and Darragh means they don't sound the same.

I also have an English accent so they don’t sound exactly the same but very similar.

Also, Kara with a Scottish accent does rhyme with Darragh and my Dad and his family are all Scottish.

I've always loved Rhuairidh, but people might struggle with that if you don't live in Scotland. But you're probably already used to that with an Aoife.

People have coped surprisingly well with Aoife. Initially there was some confusion but people have learnt to say and spell it.

Traditional Irish/Scottish spellings wouldn’t stop us choosing a name.
