It’s a name I’ve always loved but DH worried it might be a bit chavvy (it’s not where I come from)

Just no

ABCXYZ17 · 17/10/2023 04:20

He’ll be bullied, don’t do it.

SquishingWell · 17/10/2023 04:25

Where my maternal family are from it’s quite normal, but obviously in the native language, not English

I still really like it tbh

No.

Imagine shouting it in a playground when he’s misbehaving!

Fifireee · 17/10/2023 04:29

There are two Angels in my school both girls.
With any name you need to imagine them at any age and would they like it then. I’m so used to unusual names now nothing surprises me. What about as a middle name?

NewIdeasToday · 17/10/2023 04:30

I’m afraid it’s seen as a girls name in the U.K. so you’d be setting your son up for a lifetime of confusion with new people and potentially bullying.

Personally I wouldn’t use it for a girl either.

Debini · 17/10/2023 04:31

Angelo might work better for a boy.

Healthandsocialcaremodule · 17/10/2023 04:40

You're naming a human, not a budgie.

mushroommummy · 17/10/2023 04:53

No now come on don’t be silly

Thelondonone · 17/10/2023 05:00

No, not for a boy or a girl.

MaggieBsBoat · 17/10/2023 05:07

Are you Spanish or Hispanic? I do think it’s a lovely boys name but Brits may be silly about it as is often the case with names they’re not used to.

ArcticBells · 17/10/2023 06:01

Absolutely not

StampOnTheGround · 17/10/2023 06:04

It's awful enough on a girl but on a boy it would be ridiculous, he'd get bullied.

cuckyplunt · 17/10/2023 06:05

It’s a person you’re naming, an eventual adult who has to live with your choice and deal with the consequences.
Give your head a wobble and try again.

Tintackedsea · 17/10/2023 06:09

Like the vampire!

SarahBeara1 · 17/10/2023 06:11

Noooooooooo..... Definitely not for a boy. DH is absolutely right.

PositanoBay · 17/10/2023 06:11

Jeez just no! People unfortunately judge you on your name, so he would constantly be on the sharp end of ridicule

anareen · 17/10/2023 06:12

I've known both. Originally, I knew it as a boys name. Hispanic families.

SaryMhelley · 17/10/2023 06:13

I used to work with a guy called Angel, his brother was called Jesus. I think they had Spanish origins iirc. It was 35 years ago and I’ve never forgotten him so it’s certainly a memorable name!
He hated it btw.

I agree.
I know an elderly male Angel, but he is Spanish. I think it's lovely, but I think these days it wouldn't go down well.

bronzetomato · 17/10/2023 06:13

In my country we use Angelo as the male version of Angela.
It's a normal name here, but in the Uk I do think it is more out there as a choice.
When a name is commonly used you tend to disassociate the name from the actual meaning, and not have preconceptions of the person with the name.
If a name is very rare then this doesn't happen and people notice the difference. So however your child behaves , then some comment on their behaviour and the name Angel will be inevitable.

Glovesandscarf · 17/10/2023 06:15

Makes me think of Angel Clare from tess of the durbervilles and he was a right bastard.
having said that, I do quite like it, and I do think kids are much more open about names nowadays. 30 years ago I’d have said a hard no because of bullying, I don’t think so much now.

Hotchocolatemousse · 17/10/2023 06:16

What about the names if male angels but not Angel itself?

Michael, Gabriel, Rafael, Uriel etc

It doesn't matter what you like, it's very unlikely a 16 year old boy would like being called Angel.

Fourlegsandatail · 17/10/2023 06:17

I think he would be bullied OP. It makes me think of the song ‘A boy named Sue’, there are some names that you just shouldn’t use for boys as they are too feminine.
