personally love it for girl or boy but DH on the fence

OP posts:

Why would you give your child something to be bullied about from birth? Give the kid a chance.

DRS1970 · 17/10/2023 08:10

I personally see it as unisex. But I know lots don't see it that way, and I fear a boy may be prone to bullying as a result. Just my opinion.

No now come on don’t be silly

😂😂
Are you a popstar? 🤔Angelo is fine, as is Valentino, but preferably in Naples.
I wouldn't be so brave where I live now..

assignedferretatbirth · 17/10/2023 08:20

I kind of love it, but I'm a lifelong Buffy fan.

I wouldn't use it for a baby though.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 17/10/2023 08:22

Fuck no

Bigroundpear · 17/10/2023 08:24

I agree with the poster who said no one would bat an eyelid in London, it’s just not unusual at all. I think Angel delight because I’m old. But yeh I like the name for a boy, it’s fine. Just be sure you’re happy with the hard J sound in the British pronunciation.

twostraws · 17/10/2023 08:25

It's a great name for a vampire with a soul.

MartyFunkhouser · 17/10/2023 08:26

I don’t think many will think you’re a Hardy fan. They’ll just think it a bloody awful, naff name to saddle a child with.

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 17/10/2023 08:26

No. Angelo might be nice, though.

Somewhatchallenging · 17/10/2023 08:27

I’m a bit surprised by these replies. I think it’s fine, but I live in London, and there are all sorts of names. I also see it more as a male name than a female one. Aren’t angels male? Angelo might be easier in the UK. Can’t you use the actual name from your home country, not the anglicised version?

StrikesFutureWife · 17/10/2023 08:33

Sadly OP I don't think the question was ever going to get a fair trial here because many if not most respondents won't be aware that the male pronunciation of Angel is different to the female Angel that sits on the tree at Christmas.

When pronounced Ang (as in hang) Gel (as in posh accent version of girl ie hard G sound) then it's a really strong name. And although likely most UK based people would say it the female way first time, after being told it'd be no issue. Depends if you want the faff of the correcting people for years to come.

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/10/2023 08:38

Oh dear. Don't.

3luckystars · 17/10/2023 09:04

@StrikesFutureWife

so it’s pronounced Angle?

SummaLuvin · 17/10/2023 09:13

It's remarkable how openly ignorant so many MN posters are, Angel isn't even an unusual or niche Spanish name. It's no wonder so many bleat about bullying risk when they hold this attitude to any names other than the likes of Matthew, David, and George. I do hope they're not raising their children to be so judgemental...

Princesspollyyy · 17/10/2023 09:14

No.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 17/10/2023 09:22

It’s not ignorant to not like a name…

StrikesFutureWife · 17/10/2023 09:25

3luckystars · 17/10/2023 09:04

@StrikesFutureWife

so it’s pronounced Angle?

Not quite, the end would be more like elle said the way Michelle would be. And for a Spaniard they'd managed the g in the middle slightly differently which would almost have an h in it. Hard to describe in words.

BoohooWoohoo · 17/10/2023 09:27

Are you in the UK?
If you're in a Spanish speaking country then it's fine but in the UK I think it gives stripper vibes like the name Honey. I would name a boy Angelo rather than Angel if you're in the UK.

KilgoreTrouts · 17/10/2023 09:34

3luckystars · 17/10/2023 09:04

@StrikesFutureWife

so it’s pronounced Angle?

No, not remotely. The ‘g’ is a little like the Scouse pronunciation of ‘ck’ in the throat, or the ‘ch’ at the end of ‘loch’. If you can’t manage that, say ‘Ann-HELL’, but that’s not really it.

caringcarer · 17/10/2023 09:50

In the UK Angel is a girl's name. Angelo is for boys.

LadyTrunchbull · 17/10/2023 09:51

Not unless he's a latino pimp. 😂😂😂

CurlewKate · 17/10/2023 09:53

Absolutely fine. If it's OK to call girls Rory and James it's obviously OK to call a boy Angel.

FeelSoDown · 17/10/2023 09:57

'Ann hell' sounds way too much like anal. Imagine when he's a teen 😔

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/10/2023 09:57

Angel Clare. Utter bastard who did for Tess. Poor poor Tess 😰

TemporarilyshyAF · 17/10/2023 10:12

If you're a Spanish speaking family ok but wouldn't it be Ángel? I would not suggest Angel, pronounced the English way, for a British lad. Gabriel or Michael instead?

Call your kid anything you like in theory but some names just don't work as well in some countries and he's the one stuck with it.

The Spanish version absolutely doesn't remotely sound like 'anal' ffs. None of the vowels match.
