Not unless he's a latino pimp. 😂😂😂

Why a latino pimp? It's a perfectly normal name in Spanish speaking countries
Why not a latino civil servant, GP or navy officer?

Well, it's a common Latino gangster name in films. Bit like Tony in Italian American mafioso. Doesn't mean there aren't loads of normal Tonies.

Iheartpizza · 17/10/2023 13:44

It's bad enough on a girl. No way should you use it for a boy.

Sp1ke3 · 17/10/2023 13:56

No, Angel Clare is one of the vilest creatures in English literature and has ruined the name forever (and he moved on to her little sister after poor Tess!)

gotomomo · 17/10/2023 14:23

How about Gabriel nicknamed angel? Gives him the option to go by Gabe, a more common male name in English

Thegoodbadandugly · 17/10/2023 14:28

All these parents that want something different for their children because the parent wants to feel special don't give a dam or thought about the ridicule that they put their children through, just why?

FoleyHuck · 17/10/2023 14:38

If you live in the place it's common and not chavvy (eg. Spain) then fine, but if you don't then you need to consider reaction to it where you do live.

DH is Swedish so we may pick a Swedish name but since we live in the UK and that's where our baby will at least start life, we probably wouldn't choose Vanentin or Gustava.

Wishingwell57 · 17/10/2023 14:41

No.. Angel is a girl's name.
You would be setting him up for years of bullying.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/10/2023 14:44

I would also think of Angel Clare in Tess. Not a positive association I'm afraid.

specialguest · 17/10/2023 15:15

Angel is a term of endearment also.

In Good Omens Crowley calls Aziraphale Angel (because he's an actual angel) and everyone assumes they're dating.

So I'm not sure in English it translates well to a name.

Pinkbonbon · 17/10/2023 15:17

Oh dear no. Not unless you want to raise him with a god complex.

I wouldn’t.
As PPs have said:
Angelo
Gabriel

Daisybuttercup12345 · 17/10/2023 23:58

No. He will be bullied.
Save it for a pet. Not someone who will grow into a man!
Not keen on it for a girl either.
Angela might be due a comeback soon.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/10/2023 00:20

Only if he's a vampire with a soul.

CallieQ · 18/10/2023 00:45

Nooooooo

threecupsofteaminimum · 18/10/2023 00:48

No, pease no.

Goldie played a gangster in Eastenders back in the late 90s called Angel and that was ridiculous enough.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 18/10/2023 04:48

I’m not too fond of it for a girl.

but definitely not for a boy.

I had a classmate named Angelo. And I rather like the name Angela.

but it [Angel] just doesn’t sound as nice in English. And I’m echoing pp about not creating a boy named Sue situation…

SquishingWell · 18/10/2023 20:49

Wow surprised at the replies.

I did wonder how it would be received in the UK bit at the same time I also don’t want the child to be seen as “foreign” straight away because they have a name that’s not English or easy to say.

not worried about the bullying thing, if you are going to be bullied kids will find anything how you look, how you speak etc… not just a name. I think most kids don’t care about names do they? They just know the person as that name and that’s it. Who is teaching their kids to judge someone on a name?

Also curious about the “are you a celebrity” comments… what does this mean? Why can normal people not choose a name think beautiful even if it is not usual?

SquishingWell · 18/10/2023 20:53

Basically… I thought it was DH being uptight but obviously not! 😢

i feel like it's tempting fate to an early demise.
that being said i do not feel the same way about angelo or angela

onwardsup4 · 18/10/2023 21:05

Lol

Teddleshon · 18/10/2023 21:06

Yes, could never get past Hardy’s Angel Clare, one of the biggest pricks in literary history.

russetapple · 18/10/2023 21:07

Angelo: yes.
Angel: no.
