Boy name suggestions please based on these criteria...

We found out this week our baby is a boy, we are super excited (we would have been very happy either way but we just love to know). We already have a three year old daughter.
However, our girl name was set in stone and we're not so sure on boy names.
The only two we can agree on are Reid (current front runner) and Flynn, but I'm not convinced either of them is "it".

I'd love some suggestions based on the following criteria in case there's anything we haven't thought of:

  • We prefer Scottish names or names with a Scottish or Celtic connection. We're Scottish living in Scotland.
  • We have a long surname that you need to explain how to pronounce or spell so we want a first name that is short and simple
  • One or two syllables preferred (for the reason above)
  • Goes with sister named Rosa
  • There's a high chance he will have red hair, this has featured in our thinking so far (Flynn and Reid both have connections to 'red') but isn't essential, just might help you picture the wee person you're thinking of a name for

Looking forward to your suggestions!

Prefer Finn to Flynn. I don't like Reid and it would need spelling (Reid/Reed).
Rosa and Reid/Rory a bit matchy-matchy

Rowan

From a name dictionary:
Origin:Irish. Meaning:little red-head. Rowan is a gender-neutral name of Irish and Scottish origins, deriving from Ruadhán, meaning “little redhead.”

Edited

Rowan or Rede (from old Scots) are both lovely

Bristolnewcomer · 14/09/2023 15:22

Brodie as a PP suggested is lovely.

Not convinced about Reid. I just read it as red and think it's inevitable if he has red hair he'll be Red Reid which I don't love. Also not sure on Rosa and Reid.

Flynn is really nice.

Baxter or Baird?

Coming from the SW what about the other end of celtic - Carn?

You don't need a connection to use a name you like! My name is French but I have no connection with France.

Elaina87 · 15/09/2023 17:45

I definitely think you would have to clarity the spelling of Reid for most people, so wouldn't wouldn't with that one if that's your concern.

Elektrokat22 · 15/09/2023 18:06

Euan / Ewan!

I have a Iwan (Welsh spelling) and it’s a wonderful name.

Mostlyoblivious · 15/09/2023 19:32

Of your 2 - I prefer Flynn to Reid

Pasithean · 16/09/2023 00:25

Outnumberedbywillies · 16/09/2023 17:15

Ruaridh (pronounced roo-ray not Rory), Hamish, Conall, Caelan, Conan, Calum, Gregor, Fergus, Duncan, Arran, Angus, Hector and Fraser were our boys names choices.

upstair123 · 16/09/2023 20:26

Ewan / euan!

But I'm biased as I have a little Ewan 😍

sleepismyhobby · 16/09/2023 20:49

Ryan and Rory are nice names like

Palewildflower · 16/09/2023 21:42

Reid and Flynn are ok, I’m just not keen on surnames as first names. My son’s name is Logan, a good Scottish name! My daughter has an Irish name. We’re stopping at two kids or else we would have to keep on naming them British names 😂 I second Innes, fudgin’ great name! I really liked it but my husband wasn’t keen lol. A few months after he was born I said what if we called him Travis, well he just flipped! Travis could’ve been the only name that would’ve topped Logan lol. Don’t know if it’s a Scottish name, but it’s a Scottish band, which is my favourite band.

Sooo yeh

Logan
Innes
Travis

McVittieBiscuit · 16/09/2023 21:50

What about Rhett? Like Rhett Butler (the old time Hollywood actor)

Also connected to red for his likely ginger hair…

mathanxiety · 16/09/2023 22:55

Ruairi/ Rory (means red haired king in Irish)
Oscar (an Irish name also found in Europe)
Killian
Fintan
Fergus
Callum
