Boy name suggestions please based on these criteria...

We found out this week our baby is a boy, we are super excited (we would have been very happy either way but we just love to know). We already have a three year old daughter.
However, our girl name was set in stone and we're not so sure on boy names.
The only two we can agree on are Reid (current front runner) and Flynn, but I'm not convinced either of them is "it".

I'd love some suggestions based on the following criteria in case there's anything we haven't thought of:

  • We prefer Scottish names or names with a Scottish or Celtic connection. We're Scottish living in Scotland.
  • We have a long surname that you need to explain how to pronounce or spell so we want a first name that is short and simple
  • One or two syllables preferred (for the reason above)
  • Goes with sister named Rosa
  • There's a high chance he will have red hair, this has featured in our thinking so far (Flynn and Reid both have connections to 'red') but isn't essential, just might help you picture the wee person you're thinking of a name for

Looking forward to your suggestions!

What about Robbie?

ScotsLass87 · 17/09/2023 09:14

@mathanxiety but the OP doesn’t want Irish names, they want Scottish ones! So I don’t know why you’ve focussed on Irish, it’s not the same thing! Ruairi is an Irish name, and I personally have never seen it used in Scotland.

The Scottish name is Ruairidh/Ruaridh (bonus points as it does mean red headed king) and I love this name! I used it for my son, but I wouldn’t use it if I had a complicated surname like the OP does.

I do think it sounds ok with Rosa though which was another consideration for the OP. Rory is too similar in my mind (Row-ray and Row-sa), but I think Roo-ray would work.

Ryder? Rider? Like Reid (a little meh imo) and like Flynn Rider from Rapunzel. (The only hot Disney hero imo)

KnickerlessParsons · 17/09/2023 09:53

Ross or Murdo

anothercupparosytea · 17/09/2023 13:34

I like Reid and it's familiar enough in Scotland without there being several in every class.

Other names I like which I don't think have been mentioned already are Struan and Campbell

ididntwanttodoit · 17/09/2023 16:18

Arran is more Scottish than Aaron, but pronounced the same.

What about:
Murray
Lennox
Blair
Struan
Gregor
Rory (ticks the "red" box)
Iain
Hamish
Ranald
Duncan
Lewis
Harris
Jock

Dinobot · 17/09/2023 16:37

Corin

Leab23 · 17/09/2023 19:01

Harkin is a gaelic name meaning red
Jarek is slavik and means fierce and red
Egan means little fire

dadoodoodoo · 17/09/2023 19:08

Lorne

dadoodoodoo · 17/09/2023 19:15

Which means fox so has the red element as well

mathanxiety · 18/09/2023 03:30

@ScotsLass87
She said Scottish or Celtic connection.

Therefore I included Irish names.

mathanxiety · 18/09/2023 03:30

...and Flynn is an Irish surname...

LavenderSweetPea · 18/09/2023 18:53

Not a Scottish name, but one that requires no spelling explanation 'August' - a month where Scotland is perhaps at it's most beautiful.

Kfrt · 20/09/2023 11:32

Hi!
my little boy is named Rui (I’m Scottish) it’s short and sweet and it also means ‘red’ or ‘red haired king’ something along those lines!

also matches his sisters name!

hope you like it :) .. so far we’ve never met another!

reabies · 20/09/2023 12:18

I have a Flynn and we get lots of compliments (and always pleased to see positive feedback on threads like this haha) but since Finn/Finley is so popular at the moment I have had to clarify fairly often that it's 'Flynn with an L'.

My first thought was Rory and in my accent the start is quite different to Rosa, but maybe in other accents they are too similar.

What about Roy? It's very grandpa-chic at the moment, and also has connections to red. Ray and Reggie are having a resurgence right now, Roy might be next. I think Reid is a bit cooler though.

Struan, Logan, Lachlan as mentioned by PP are gorgeous too!

mumtotwox · 20/09/2023 12:20

@Kfrt I love Rui! Are you pronouncing it "r oo ee"?

readingmakesmehappy · 20/09/2023 12:22

Hector

Kfrt · 20/09/2023 13:01

Aww thank you, yes we pronounce it roo-ee if that makes sense 😂. It is a bit like Rory/Reu etc but not as common!

I live down in England and my partners English so I love my little boys name reminds me of home 🥰!

Hankthehonk · 22/09/2023 15:29

Really grateful for everyone's suggestions! There are lots of fantastic names suggested here that we unfortunately need to rule out as they are the names of family and close friends 🥲
Lots of people suggesting Arran...it's a bit too on the nose, we live close to and visit the island regularly and our daughter is named for Glen Rosa there!

I'm still considering our original two, I also love Aidan but for some reason dh doesn't like it. I LOVE Ruaridh but just feel it wouldn't be fair on our son as he will definitely have to spell/explain our surname forever.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to make suggestions

@Hankthehonk , you're Scottish and living in Scotland, use Ruairidh if you and your DH love it. He'll be spelling his surname anyway.

Hankthehonk · 22/09/2023 20:23

@MerryChristmasToYou Thanks I see your point, but it's in my mind that my kids might not always live in Scotland. My dh also doesn't love it as much as I do, Reid is very much his first choice.
