So, here's a question for you: what's your take on the name Maria? It's extremely popular across the world, but that doesn't deter me. I think it's lovely and it's one I keep coming back to, despite the nagging feeling that I can't quite explain that's preventing me from committing to it. Any thoughts? DP has suggested Marina but I think I prefer Maria.

Maria is simple and pretty and better than Marina imo

It's because it's a variation of Mary, so a lot of Catholic countries use it a lot. I really wanted Mary for DD (loved Three Men and a Little Lady!)

Mary is lovely, Jane too. Sweet with a timeless quality that makes them endearing, without relying on any artificial sweeteners

It’s a name that’s been extremely overused in a lot of countries. But I think that the Maria train has slowed down quite a bit and Sophia/Sofia and Mia has taken it’s place and are now running their course of overuse and Maria would be refreshing to hear now. Maria is a lovely classic after all so of course it’s a beautiful choice. It’s actually my grandmother’s name. And you have so many wonderful songs called Maria too which is always fun. I say go for it if you really love it!

My friend is called Maria, I think it's a beautiful name, her middle name is Elena ( Maria Elena was a popular instrumental tune back in the day) she doesn't care for it, but it does flow beautifully though.

Always loved that name and would’ve named one of my DDs but I had an uncle marry a Maria .

I absolutely love it! Beautiful name, classic but not overused in the UK. Easy to spell and pronounce all around the world. Perfect.

Jane is also lovely now because it was shunned for so long as being plain. Would love a Jane now among the sea of old lady names like Ada and Maude.

I like Maria but my favourite is Mary.
I agree that Jane and , indeed Joan, have the air of being just ahead of the curve.

I also know a Maria Elena! I don't think there are that many of them, despite the song. She stopped using Elena because it got so badly mispronounced in the UK.

I love Maria, I’ve not come across a young one. It’s my DDs middle name after a family member.

It’s used a lot for a very good reason, it’s a classic beauty.

Maria is lovely...... less keen on Jane...mainly cos the Jane's I know don't like it as a name!
