Just think of the money that baby will make when it's old enough to write one of those 'No mummy! Not the axe again' crappy-childhood books.

PuppyDogTails · 02/03/2008 20:43

How was she pronouncing it?

BrownSuga · 02/03/2008 20:46

I think the registrar would not allow it

I'm sure I've heard of it before. Quite a few babies have been named it I think...

It normally arrives about

Wasn't this story in Freakonomics (recent book)? My copy's in storage, but I'm sure there was a chapter on how naming a child can have huge consequences for their lives. Am sure this was one of the examples (funnily enough, of what not to do ...)

Boco · 02/03/2008 20:52

My Grandma was a social worker and worked with a family who had just arrived from Africa with a little boy called Latrine.

TotalChaos · 02/03/2008 20:53

oh god. I feel rather sorry for the mum having such lack of literacy etc.

controlfreakyagain · 02/03/2008 20:53

exactly ranting

Blandmum · 02/03/2008 20:54

Thank you ranting, I felt that post was overdue!

mollymawk · 02/03/2008 20:56

Yes, PeatBog, I think I saw this in Freakonomics too. Pronounced Shuh-TEED.

soapbox · 02/03/2008 20:56

One of the fathers at DC's school is called 'Shiten'.

Hmm, a quick google reveals that the 'Shithead' story and similar have been doing the rounds for a while. The author of Freakonomics himself admits that his source was a friend of a friend or some such.

Not doubting your story, but hoping it's also an urban myth ...

Don't think it would be allowed in UK anyway. I think the registrar (?) has the right to sop baby names that are offensive for example.

PeatBog · 02/03/2008 21:10

Even so, Meggle, the urban myth may have become so widespread that people just hear the name and like it?
